Verna Blood Obituary

DENISON- Verna Jane Blood was reunited with her beloved husband, Warren "Cap" Blood, on February 22, 2018. Together they walk in the Light of the Lord.
Verna Jane was born to Hilma and August Weappa on May 30, 1928, in Sebeka, MN. Verna graduated from Sebeka High School in Sebeka, MN. She then received her bachelor's degree from University of St. Cloud, St. Cloud, MN.
Family, faith and community were important to Verna. She married her loving husband, Warren "Cap" Blood, on August 18, 1951 in Wadena, MN. Verna and Cap were both teachers. Verna was a physical education teacher and taught in Glennwood, MN; Fargo, ND; Pearsall, TX; and Denison, TX. After moving to Texas, Verna and Cap welcomed their son, Mark, into the world on April 8, 1967. They purchased the oldest home in Denison, renovated it, and registered it as a historical site. When Verna and Cap would go on vacation, they loved to dance to the "Tennessee Waltz."
The Blood family had an inclusive world view. Cap hosted many trips to Russia during the Cold War until he was diagnosed with colon cancer. Verna cared for her husband until his passing from cancer in 1990. Verna enjoyed being active and watching sporting events. She was an avid tennis player until her knees gave out. Then, she started swimming every day. For over 50 years, Verna has been a member of the Grace Lutheran Church, Denison, TX. She was the queen of potluck casseroles and cooked for the former Texoma Lutheran Camp and Behavioral Health Center. In addition to her family and faith, Verna was active in the Grayson County Republican Party and the Texoma Pro-Life group.
Verna was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Warren "Cap" Blood. She is survived by her loving son, Mark H. Blood, Denison, TX and two beloved granddaughters, Grace Blood and Emma Blood, Denison, TX.
A memorial service will be held March 5, 2018 at 3:00 pm at Grace Lutheran Church, 2411 Woodlake Rd, Denison, TX 75021, presided over by Pastor Mattil.

Sad to hear of her passing. I adored this woman, she was always so kind to me.

When living in East Texas....I ran across some friends from my high school days post on Facebook who was telling me that Verna Blood my old P.E. teacher in Denison was still alive and was swimming daily!! I was elated to lean this as she was a favorite of mine and I could totally envision her doing just that. I was able to get her phone number then and called her. We had a delightful chat and, with an open invitation from her, I purposed in my heart that next time I was in that area I would look her up. What a wonderful time we had...remembering the old days and laughing over this and that!! I told her a few things that I remembered from her teaching from back then...and was so happy to be able to tell her how special she always was to me. I got to meet her son Mark and was happy to learn that he and my oldest son shared the same birth year....While looking for a home over in Denison later, I looked at one just down the street from her and she promised that if I got it, she'd walk up and have coffee with me. Sadly, we didn't, but just recently did buy one there and I had even told my husband I couldn't wait to tell her we had finally got one. God decided to call her home before that happened...and I never knew when she passed....but I know I'll see her again!! I am so very thankful to have HAD a 'Verna Blood" in my life, and even more grateful the Lord allowed me to see her again and enjoy even more of her time and wisdom...My thoughts and prayers to Mark and his family. God bless you all!

To have lived a long life and gained experience to share is truly a reward (Psalms 90:10). To family and friends, may you find comfort in the many cherished memories.
