Eric Henning Obituary

Dr. Eric Henning

Dr. Eric Norman Henning, 60, died at home on February 27, from complications of pancreatic cancer.
He is survived and loved forever by wife, Bonnie (Holler); sons, Lars and Lucas; and sister, Kristin (Bartel), who are grateful to have been present to honor his journey.
Eric was born December 30, 1949, to Earl Nels and Jane Cary Henning. He grew up in St. Cloud, MN, and graduated from Carleton College, Northfield, MN, in 1972, with a B.A. in English. He graduated from the University of Minnesota Medical School and completed his residency in Family Practice medicine in 1987. Arlington, WA became the Henning home in 1987, and Eric enjoyed the ensuing years practicing medicine, spending time with his family, mountain biking, snowboarding, working on home projects, and exploring the Pacific Northwest. Eric was employed by Northwest Emergency Physicians, and worked for the past 22 years in the Emergency Department at Cascade Valley Hospital in Arlington. In 2005, he became Medical Director of Emergency Services for CVH. With the opening of the new hospital wing earlier this year, the expanded Emergency Department was dedicated to Dr. Henning, honoring him for his leadership, mentoring, and service. Henning also worked as Medical Program Director for the City of Arlington Fire Department and participated in disaster response planning for the district.
Henning is preceded in death by his parents; and his sister, Beth (Olson).
He is survived by an extensive admiration society, including nieces and nephews, brothers- and sisters-in-law, co-workers, friends, and so many others who encountered Eric's gentle and intelligent manner.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff at Virginia Mason (Seattle), OptionCare, Skagit Valley Hospice, CaringBridge.org, and the people of Arlington Fire Department and the CVH Emergency Department for their personal and professional support of Eric and the family.
A celebration of Eric's life will be held from 1-4 p.m., Saturday, March 6, at A Country Location, 333 156th St. N.E., Smokey Point, WA. Casual attire, and please plan for an outdoor walk.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Cascade Valley Hospital and Clinics Foundation, 330 S. Stillaguamish Ave., Arlington, WA 98223.

Dr Henning was a light in the dark. We moved to Arlington in 1989 and worked at CVH with this intelligent, funny and compassionate man. On so many levels he was a role model. Our best wished to his family.

Dr. Henning, I am going to miss you. Many years working together in the ER and with Arlington FD. I will always cherish the memories of your humor, passion and smile. You never could said no to a tall non-fat latte and a muffin top.

I rarely read the obituaries, but saw Dr. Henning's obituary and wanted to express my deepest sympathy to Luke. I know of no other way to tell you how sorry I am for your loss. Whenever I was in the ER (either with my son or my mother in law) I would ask your father how you were doing. He was always so proud of you and would tell me about you latest adventure or how you were doing in school (that was awhile ago). My thoughts are with you and your family. I am so sorry.

Dr. Henning was instrumental in guiding my family through many medical emergencies as our parents struggled through years of our father's Alzheimers and mother's dementia (after a brain injury). His gentle and kind demeanor comforted us through many a medical crisis. Knowing he was the first face they saw at the emergency dept. at Cascade Valley gave them a measure of consolation. We will never forget his many kindnesses. Our prayers for the family. Dr. Henning served this community and the impact of his life will be greatly missed.
