Elaine Duke Obituary

Elaine DukeROCK HILL - Mrs. Elaine Chapman Duke, 60, moved on to her heavenly home on Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2013. A celebration of life will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 20, 2013, at Carolinas Cornerstone in Fort Mill, S.C., with the Rev. Barry Yates officiating. Burial will be private. Born Elaine Marie Chapman on Feb. 28, 1953, in Rock Hill, she was the daughter of the late Bill T. and Marie Spake Chapman. Early in her life, she was employed by Lance Inc. in Charlotte and in the banking industry in the Rock Hill area. She was most proud of her career in public service at York County 911, the York County Sheriff's Office and Winthrop University Police Department. Elaine loved traveling, cruises, camping, gardening and tending to her roses, finding the last few years that she really did have a green thumb! Her favorite places were Myrtle Beach and the warm sunny beaches of Florida and the Caribbean. Elaine was a very supportive and loving wife, a great mother and a terrific grandmother. Her family always came first in her life. She was a great listener who had wisdom far beyond her formal education. She also had a firm belief in the Lord. Surviving are her husband, Harold C. Duke; her son, Chad Duke and his fiancee', Amanda Deas of Rock Hill; her daughter, Crystal Duke Burnett and her husband, Michael of York; her four grandchildren, Kayla Marie Duke and Clara Elaine Duke, both of Rock Hill, Nathan Harold Duke Burnett of York and Caylee Jade Duke of Sumter; and her brothers, Tommy Chapman of Rock Hill and Barry Chapman and his wife, Phyllis of Waxhaw, N.C. The family would like to thank Dr. Earle Burgess and the staff of the Levine Cancer Institute in Pineville, N.C., and the staff of Hospice & Community Care in Rock Hill for their expertise, care and compassion throughout her illness. The family will have a beach celebration immediately following the service at the church. Please wear casual beach clothing. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Mrs. Duke's name to Palmetto Pregnancy Center, 828 Lucas St., Rock Hill, SC 29730 or to Hospice & Community Care, P.O. Box 993, Rock Hill, SC 29731. Elaine and I met many years ago at Lance. We were best friends. She helped set me up to the man I'm still married to today 35 years ago. We used to lay out by her parent's pool and talk for hrs., go shopping, borrow each others clothes, ride up and down cherry road, I remember how nervous she was before she got married among many other great things. Even though we grow up, and lost touch with one another over the years. I never forgot what wonderful friendship we shared. We laughed together so many times. She truly touched my life and my heart in a big way. To her family.... just know she will never be forgotten. Her spirit will live in your hearts (and mine) forever.

When you feel led to do something do it... I was suppose to call or at the very least send a card. I wanted you to know I thought you were an awesome mom and for me you made working at Winthrop a little easier...your smile made some of my darkest days brighter and now I sit in tears because you're gone and because I never got a chance to say Thank You! You'll be Missed Mrs. Elaine
