Surrounded by loved ones, Donald Leslie Peters of St. Joseph, went home to be with the Lord on Jan. 18, 2025. Don was born to Benjamin "B.A." and Frances Carpp Peters in Benton Harbor on Dec. 20, 1929.
Don met the love of his life, Rheta (Gard), in the eighth grade, and together they shared an extraordinary journey, marked by 75 years of marriage. Countless memories were made at the extended Peters log cabin on Lake Michigan including daredevil Jeep rides in the dunes.
He and Rheta created a haven at their beautiful cottage on Thunder Mountain, where family gatherings became the cornerstone of their shared joy. Don took great pleasure in listening to Rheta's beautiful piano playing along with enjoying quiet moments together on the porch in St. Joseph.
He spent his entire career working with his brother, Gene and their father, B.A. Peters. First with a stall at the Benton Harbor Fruit Market and then as owners of a truck leasing company, B.A. Peters Co.
Don's life was deeply rooted in faith. A devoted Christian, he and Rheta were longtime members of Peace Temple in Benton Harbor and are current members at Pathway Methodist Church in St. Joseph. Don was also a long-time member of the Benton Harbor Exchange Club. His commitment to a Godly life and community were an example to many.
He will be remembered for his infectious laugh, captivating stories and unwavering love for his family.
Don is survived by his loving wife, Rheta; Darcy (Ron) Baskins, Leslie (Judy) Peters, Dean (Susan) Peters, Blair (Sandra) Peters, along with numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is reunited in heaven with his parents: B.A. and Frances Peters; his siblings: Betty Lull, Eugene Peters, Wanda Lyons and Lloyd Reece.
A service for Don will be held at a later date. Memorials in Don's name may be made to Pathway Global Methodist Church in St. Joseph. Those wishing to sign Don's memory book online may do so at www.starks-menchinger.com. Arrangements entrusted to Starks & Menchinger Chapel, St. Joseph.
