Growing up in Salisbury there were so many that took interest in my success. I had a tribe that ensured that this black boy had all the tools I needed to become whatever I wanted. Dr. Ada Fisher was one of those people. She along with my uncle Robert Smyre, former guidance counselor at North Rowan single-handedly changed the trajectory of my future by offering every pathway to success. Starting in high school they identified leadership programs, internships, and scholarships that would nurture and support my skills as an emerging leader.

As a young kid interested in politics, Dr. Fisher`s influence and voice was something to be admired. Although she identified as a Republican and she knew my family as democrats, she took interest in me and simply wanted me to gain the skills because to her Black people needed to know the political process and to be engaged in their communities. She was right.

When I began my search for college she wrote her most powerful friends asking them to give Ervin Johnson a chance. She demanded they give me money to attend college and entry to the colleges of my choice. Her voice yielded me acceptance in top universities with full scholarships.

When I told her I wanted to move to DC and try an internship in Capitol Hill. She moved mountains and it happened. She understood that black men and women deserved the same acesss and opportunity and ensured those under wings had it.

She did countless other things for my life but most of all she saw my potential and made it possible for me to be the man I am today.

All she wanted in return was for me to become succes, give back to my community, and ensure other brothes and sisters had the opportunity. I hope i´ve made you proud.

Rest in Power Dr. Fisher
