Hugo DeMartino Obituary

DeMartino, Hugo A.
Jul. 26, 1925 - Feb. 11, 2016
Hugo Albert DeMartino 90, born July 26, 1925, died Feb. 11, 2016. Lived most recently in Ballston Lake, NY and Venice, FL., and passed away due to complications during heart surgery.
When Hugo was 3 yrs old, he immigrated from Genoa, Italy to Yonkers New York with his parents Renato and Edna (Fasce). The family eventually landed in Hastings, NY. His brother Arnold, sister Delores grew up in this community where he was a member of the Hastings High School football team. He proudly became a US citizen as he joined the 91st Infantry Division of the US Army during WWII; served in the rank of sergeant, and earned a Purple Heart. After returning home, he met Alice Joan Moore on a blind date in college (Hugo at University of Detroit, Alice at Marygrove College), they courted remotely and ultimately married. Hugo earned his Ph.D in Clinical Psychology at St. John's University. He worked for many years in the Lakeland NY Schools and had a private practice in psychology in Yorktown Heights, NY.
Hugo is predeceased by Alice and is survived by their five children: Richard (Barbara Derian) of Ballston Lake, NY, William (Kathleen) of Atlanta, Georgia, Steven (Kathleen) of Painted Post, NY, Vincent (Nancy) of Winthrop, MA, and Alisa (Tim Estes) of Edwards, CO, as well as his six grandchildren (Emily, Alison, Patrick, Sarah, Matthew and Laura). He is also survived by a vast network of friends made during his service as a clinical and school Psychologist, as a retiree - both in New York and Florida, all who felt a special bond with him.
Hugo enjoyed being the older brother of Dolores and Arnie, and Alice's siblings (Francis DeChant, Terry Moore, and Helen Moore) and was extremely proud of his children and took great joy in his grandchildren. He had a great attitude about life, and taking people at face value. Our greatest hope for him is to be met at the pearly gates of Heaven with a comfy pair of sweat pants, tee shirt and Alice. The sadness of Hugo's passing has left a hole in each of the family and extended family hearts. Hugo will be intensely missed each and every day. His legacy of passion for family, love of people, concern for the environment, and important social causes will endure forever.
The DeMartino family will be hosting a celebration of Hugo's life at The St. Peter Armenian Church at 2pm in Ballston Lake NY on February 27, 2016. In lieu of flowers, Hugo's favored charity is www.doctorswithoutborders.com- he would want to have you donate to them or to love each other unconditionally.

Vince & Nancy and the DeMartino family-I'm sorry for your loss, and although I never met him, he lived quite a remarkable and interesting life. Rest in Peace.
