Janet Underwood, age 73, of Sarasota, Fla. died on the afternoon of Tuesday, Sept. 25, at the home of her son and daughter-in-law in Manatee County, Fla.
Ms. Underwood was born in Stockton-on-Tees in County Durham, England, the daughter of William and Amelia Boville.
Newly married, she immigrated in 1962 to the United States at age 17 with then-husband, William J. Shopes, of San Francisco, Calif. After nine years, she moved to northern Virginia, where she later became married to Richard A. Underwood, formerly of Minnesota. After a long and distinguished career in banking, she retired alone to Sarasota in 2013.
A devoted mother, Ms. Underwood raised two sons. She loved traveling, cooking, reading literature, watching tennis, spending time with family and hosting family members from abroad, especially during holidays. An animal lover, she owned several dogs during her lifetime and frequently spent time with other neighborhood dog-walkers exploring her "beloved" Leesburg, Va., and Sarasota, Fla.
She passed away quietly surrounded by family. She is survived by sons Richard E. Shopes of Manatee County, Fla., and Philip D. Shopes of Bellingham, Wash.; daughter-in-law Sandra R. Santilli of Manatee County, Fla.; one brother, Bere Boville, one sister, Freda Mawson and one sister-in-law, Beryl Boville, all of Stockton-on-Tees, England. She also is survived by numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2018, 11:00AM at Church of the Redeemer (Episcopal), 222 South Palm Ave., Sarasota, FL 34236. A burial service will be held afterward at Palms Memorial Park, 170 Honore Ave., Sarasota, FL 34232.
