Len van Nieuwenhuyzen Obituary

Len (Leendert) van Nieuwenhuyzen, 79, Port Charlotte, died July 7, 2004. He was born Jan. 27, 1925, in Halfweg (N-H), Netherlands. He lived in France two years after World War II before immigrating to Michigan in 1949. He owned a dairy farm for several years and was then employed by the state of Michigan Corrections Office for over 23 years. After retirement, he moved to Port Charlotte in 1988. He was a collector of Dutch military arms for many years, attending gun shows in Michigan and Ohio. He was active in genealogy for the past 20 years. He was a member of Port Charlotte United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Ellen; daughters Gwen Larmore of Clermont and Colleen of Lowell, Mich.; a son, Christopher of Hudsonville, Mich.; sisters Adrie van Schoten and Anneka de Bruin, both of the Netherlands; and six grandchildren. A celebration of life service will be held at a later date at Easton Methodist Church in Ionia, Mich. Paul Schelm Funeral Home in Port Charlotte is in charge. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Southwest Florida, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL 34238.
