Albert Osbahr Obituary

VERO BEACH, Fla. - Albert James Osbahr Jr., 80, died Monday, April 26, 2010, at his home in Vero Beach. He was born in Jersey City, N.J., and had lived in Vero Beach for 26 years, coming from Rockville, Md. Dr. Osbahr was a graduate of St. Peter's Prep School and College in Jersey City, N.J. He attended Fordham University and Georgetown University where he received his M.S. and doctorate degrees, respectively. After receiving his advanced degrees, he taught biology and chemistry courses at Georgetown University. Dr. Osbahr devoted his professional life working at the National Institutes of Health and Johns Hopkins University, where he researched various blood diseases for 25 years. He authored and published numerous research studies in various scientific and medical journals. He was a wonderful father who was also a volunteer baseball, basketball and football coach for the city of Vero Beach. Dr. Osbahr was an avid fan of the Washington Redskins, Georgetown Hoyas, Maryland Terps, and the UNC Tarheels. Survivors include his wife, Diana; sons, Albert III, Drew and Daryl; daughters, Valerie, Christine and Cheryl; and 12 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Jeanne, in 1967; his sister, Marilyn, in 2005; and his parents, Albert James and Helen Marie Osbahr Sr. Memorial contributions may be made to the Florida Academy of Family Physicians Foundation at 6720 Atlantic Blvd., Jacksonville, Fla. 32211; or North Carolina Society Foundation P.O. Box 27167, Raliegh, N.C. 27611. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 2 p.m. today, Saturday, May 1, 2010, at St. Helen Catholic Church, Vero Beach. Interment will follow in John's Island Cemetery, Indian River Shores. Military honors will be conducted by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3918, Vero Beach. Arrangements are under the direction of Strunk Funeral Home and Crematory, Vero Beach. A guest book may be signed at www.strunkfuneralhome.com.
