Dan Stuart "Stuart" Thompson, 90, of Hickory, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on February 18, 2026.

Born on December 27, 1935, in Wilmington, North Carolina, Stuart was the son of Emerson Thompson and Grace Thompson. He grew up in North Carolina and carried with him a deep love for learning, leadership, and service that shaped the course of his life.

Stuart was a proud graduate of Duke University (Class of 1958) and later earned his Doctor of Education degree in 1965. Over the course of a distinguished 42-year career in public education, he served students and families across North Carolina, including in Raleigh and Wake County, before ultimately leading Hickory Public Schools. As Superintendent for nearly two decades, Stuart became known for steady leadership, thoughtful decision-making, and a deep belief that strong schools build strong communities. His influence continues in the lives of the countless students, educators, and families he served.

After retiring from Hickory Public Schools in 2000, Stuart continued contributing his expertise through consulting work, remaining engaged in the field he loved.

Stuart was preceded in death by his parents, Emerson and Grace Thompson, and by his brother, Emerson M. Thompson Jr.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Teresa Thompson; his sister, Betty Baldwin; and sister-in-law, Catherine Thompson and a loving family that includes Beth and Matt Ryan; Fred Thompson; Chandra Alderman and Adella and Chris Elmore; and Jessie and Demond Sims. He was a proud grandfather to Lane Ryan, Cecilia Thompson, Will Ryan, Kyle Elmore, Emma Petticrew (Co-De), Ursula Williams, Edward Elmore, Nia Harris, Ada Elmore, Naomi Harris and Tori Sims. He is also survived by lots of nieces and nephews who loved him dearly.

Stuart's legacy is one of education, integrity, and quiet strength. He believed in the power of preparation, the responsibility of leadership, and the lasting impact of investing in young people. His life reflected a steady commitment to service and to the people entrusted to his care.

A funeral service will be held on Sunday, February 22, 2026, at 2 p.m. at Bass-Smith Funeral Home and Crematory in Hickory. The family will receive friends following the service.
