HICKORY - David Wayne Heavner, 51, ended his journey here on earth April 15, 2009, and began his journey with the Lord. He was the wonderful husband of 34 years of Jackie P. Heavner. Born July 2, 1957, in Hickory, he was the son of Ralph D. Heavner Sr. and Shirley G. Lail. David was a member of Winkler's Grove Baptist Church, a dedicated and much loved employee of Old Dominion Freight Line and a loyal Tennessee Volunteer fan. He was preceded in death by his brother, Ralph Dale Heavner Jr., and stepfather, Robert C. Lail. He is survived by his wife, Jackie P. Smith and husband, Ryan, of Hickory; two much loved grandchildren, Landrie Smith and Colton Bryan; like a daughter and son, Angie and Chris Bryan; a lifetime friend, Joe McRary and his wife, Teresa, and daughter Tara; and his Old Dominion family. A celebration of David's life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 18, 2009, at Winkler's Grove Baptist Church, with the Revs. Dale Faulkenbury and Mike Hatton and Dr. Ed Yount officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight, Friday, at Bass-Smith Funeral Home. Jackie and girls,
We were out-of-town when we heard of David's passing. Our words cannot begin to express our sorrow at your loss. It seems time for him was far too short; God had used him as he was meant, but that does not ease your grief. Know you are in our prayers!

I know you are all grieving right now and can't understand God's ways. Someone once gave me some wise words: "Stop telling God how big your storm is. Instead, tell your storm how big your God is!"
Your love for each other and for David will get you through these difficult days ahead. Please know that if you need ANYTHING, I am always available.
Love to you all,
