Frances Scheil
January 1, 1934 - March 6, 2026
After a long, fulfilling and productive life, Frances Schlindwein Scheil passed away peacefully on March 6th, 2026, at the age of 92. Born on New Year' s Day, 1934, in Jersey City, New Jersey, she was the third daughter of the late Frank and Agnes Schlindwein.
Fran was the devoted wife for over 70 years to the love of her life, Charles Philip Scheil. Their story began when they had their first date as eighth graders, riding the Coney Island roller coaster together-a fitting beginning to a lifetime of adventure, laughter, and deep devotion.
She was a loving and supportive mother, preceded in death by her husband, Charles Philip Scheil (d. August 16, 2025), and her daughter Carolyn Scheil Keister (d. January 24, 2025).
She is survived by her sons Charles (Chuck) David Scheil and Mark Philip Scheil; son-in-law Mark Jeffery Keister; and daughters-in-law Sharon Sheets Scheil and Karen Fowler Scheil.
She leaves behind seven grandchildren: Benjamin Mark Keister (Valentina Bongiovanni),
Elise Frances Keister (Aditya Kalyanshetti), Kirsten Scheil Railey (Wyatt), David Haley Owen-Keister (Maggie), Nicholas Alexander Scheil (Lauren), Cara Scheil Crumb (Brendan), and Juliana Scheil Battista (Nicholas); and four great-grandchildren: Knox Gregory Scheil, Easton James Scheil, Andie Louise Scheil, and Noah Charles Battista.
Fran grew up in Jersey City and graduated with honors from Jersey State Teachers College with a degree in elementary education. After marrying Charlie on August 6th 1955, she taught elementary school in Durham, NC for three years while he attended Duke Medical School. Her gift for teaching never left her - it showed up in the way she guided her children, and later in her pioneering work alongside Joan Rogers (of Lenoir, NC) to develop a reading program for dyslexic students in the Lenoir City School System. She also served as accountant and receptionist in Charlie's Mulberry Family Practice in Lenoir, and she gave generously of her time to the Lenoir Service League.
An innovative and passionate cook, Fran treasured her time in the kitchen, took culinary classes at Caldwell Community College, and always welcomed family and friends to her table. She left behind treasured recipes for her family and friends, notably her Christmas Ring and Carrot Cake. Her motto was simple and unwavering: "We Are Family!"
Fran had a spirit that couldn't be contained. She swam, scuba dived, camped, canoed, rafted and hiked with enthusiasm. She was a formidable tennis and ping pong player, consistently creating opportunities for her opponents to lose. Bridge and other card games provided those opponents with similar opportunities. A lifelong world traveler, she explored the globe with curiosity and joy, and after retirement in 1997, she and Charlie split their time between Lenoir, North Carolina and Melbourne Beach, Florida, where they cultivated deep friendships and dove headfirst into community life.
Music was a thread woven through her entire life. Fran possessed a beautiful voice that she shared freely - in church choir, at community events, and in the variety shows she and Charlie hosted together at Outdoor Resorts Melbourne Beach Florida. She was known to break into song at a moment's notice, right up to the end. In her final six months at Village Park Alpharetta, she remained a shining presence in the activity group - singing, gesturing, laughing, sharing her infectious smile, and driving her electric chair with characteristic flair, Choo-Choo hand motion style.
A devout Lutheran and 60-year member of St. Stephen's Lutheran Church in Lenoir, North Carolina, Fran's faith was a quiet foundation beneath everything she did and everyone she loved.
Funeral services will be held at St. Stephen's Lutheran Church, Lenoir, North Carolina on Saturday, April 18, 2026 at 3 p.m. Family visitation will be from 2 to 3 p.m. at the church, followed by a private graveside burial service.
