Dr. James Cox Fahl

Dr. James Cox Fahl of Hickory, NC passed away on Sunday, April 21, 2024.

Dr. Fahl was born October 25, 1925 in Auburn, PA to the late James E. Fahl and Dorothy Cox Fahl.

He was a graduate of West Reading (PA) High School and attended Harvard University for both his undergraduate degree and medical school diploma. Dr. Fahl served his medical internship and residency at the Mayo Clinic Rochester, MN. He served in the United States Army from 1951 until 1953 as a General Surgeon in West Germany.

Dr. Fahl's General Surgical practice began in East Stroudsburg, PA in 1955 and continued there until 1972. That year he moved to Hickory, NC to continue his practice and later retired in 1990. For the next three years he was employed as Vice President of Medicine at Catawba Valley Medical Center until he fully retired in 1994.

A lover of the outdoors, Jim enjoyed hiking, camping, and weekly rounds of golf. Family cross country trailer trips in the '60s proved both rewarding and memorable. He also loved traveling with his wife, Pat, to exotic locales and annual excursions to the beach. Hilton Head Island was always a favorite. Whenever possible, and especially after retirement, he would escape to his cabin at Porter's Lake Hunting and Fishing Club in Pennsylvania. Fishing, boating, exploring the woods, hunting, and good food were highlights of these visits. Jim loved to spend time with the family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Jim was married to the late Eleanore H. Fahl and is survived by three children: Jeffrey, Steven, and Jonathan. Later he married the late Patricia Fahl and is survived by his stepchildren: Phillip McCaul and Kathy Lovie. He is also survived by several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at a later date in Auburn, PA.
