Alice Hoffman Obituary

Hoffman
Alice Rukebai Hoffman died from leukemia at age 18 on April 12, 2011, six years to the day after she was diagnosed. Born October 1, 1992 in Lincoln, Nebraska, Alice moved to Houston at the beginning of the 5th grade and attended Annunciation Orthodox School. Following graduation from AOS, a school she loved, Alice attended Phillips Academy (Andover) in Massachusetts.
Alice had a vibrant personality and a loving and kind manner. She affected the lives of many by her courage and bravery in the face of what ultimately proved to be a deadly disease, but also by her humor and engaging personality. Alice is survived by her parents, De Lora Nobuo and Peter Hoffman, her stepmother, Betty Hoffman, her sister, Sarah Hoffman, her maternal grandparents, Hatsumi and Willy Nobuo, and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
A memorial service will be held at 4:00 pm on Sunday, April 17, 2011 at Bradshaw-Carter Funeral Home, 1734 West Alabama Street, Houston, TX 77098. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in support of the National Bone Marrow Registry: Be The Match Foundation, 3001 Broadway Street N.E., Suite 601, Minneapolis, MN 55413-1753.

How I would love to hear your take on what's happening in this crazy world today. As Mr. Miyagi would say - Wax On, Wax Off.

Alice, you probably know it's been more than a year since something called a coronavirus wrecked havoc on planet Earth. It's just plain crazy around here. I know you would have tackled this better than some adults!

Sweet, beautiful spirit and as a counselor at Camp YOLO, inspired me every moment.

I can see the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean from my bedroom window. Every morning, I hear the great roar that comes from deep within it. The seagulls swoop down to catch a meal. The waves wash up seashells, sand dollars and sugar quartzes. These things are constant. Just like your smile and sweet personality.

Another year without you and our world is lesser because of it. However, I know in my heart you are in a much better place, a place where the sun shines all the time and children laugh and play with abandon.

I'll see you in that better place.

De Lora,

You may not remember me. We shared a table in a computer class in college. I just recently learned about Alice. I am so very, very sorry for your loss! I never had the opportunity to meet her. But based on the comments of many others, it's clear that Alice was a wonderful person (like her mother). Always remember that the two of you will be together again in heaven! I hope you are doing OK.

My dear Alice. I find it hard to believe it's almost two years. You will remain a sweet young lady forever.

I just wanted to tell you I went to Hong Kong in February. I thought of you and our time there. That was a wonderful, magical time. I'm glad we experienced it together. Keep using chopsticks and drinking tea!

Team Hoffman is still representing on campus with the bright orange shirts sold two years ago to raise money for Be The Match. The cheerful color reminds us of Alice's unquenchable optimism. We miss her but remember her fondly.

There's not a day when I do not think about you, hear your voice and see your smile. Through the two years that I got to know you, I have learned so much. I still keep your letters. They remind me of your strength through all your pain. They remind me of how open you were with life. I read them when life gets a little rough just to remind how to be that strong. I love and miss you.

Ever since you passed away i have been trying to think of something to write on here, to show how much you meant to me. I have finally realized that theres no way I can say what you were to me. You were such a big part of my life, its hard to put all that into simple words but I will try. You were my first love, you were the light that guided me through darkness, you were always that happy thought in those unhappy moments, and most importantly you were always there for me. There will always be a special place in my heart for you and no one will ever change that. Alice ill forever miss you and always love you.

I met Alice at Camp YOLO (Periwinkle Foundation)as I was a counselor and I was lucky enought to have Alice in my cabin. I shall never forget Alice on the ropes course and how brave and determined she was even though she wasn't feeling well that weekend. We were all in tears as we cheered this incredible young lady on as she faced her fears head on. My deepest sympathy to her family and I will never forget your brave and sweet daughter!

Please accept my deepest condolences for the loss of your precious loved one. You are and will be in my thoughts and prayers. I praise GOD for the time you had and the memories that were created for you to cherish for the rest of your lives. How amazing is that our heavenly father can still be glorified in the face of such tradegy. Because he is the author of life....he conquered death and he makes the victory shout to the heavens that death has no sting for those who embrace his son and our blessed Lord Jesus Christ. May your grief soften in the times to become sweet memories instead of tears, and may God continue to bless your and your family always.

God bless the family of Alice. The hardest thing in life for a parent is to bury their child. The pain goes away slowly and once again you can take a breath and continue on with your life one day at a time. Alice is wrapped in God's loving arms and has reached her final home.
From a Mother that has buried her daughter. My heart felt condolences.

I first met Alice when she was 4 years old and visiting her Dad at his office in the law school in Lincoln. The next time was in Hong Kong where we all went to a restaurant for dinner and I watched her use chopsticks like an expert. She was always very precocious and I enjoyed talking with her a lot. And boy, could she talk! It was just a most wonderful time.

The last time I saw her was in Houston a few years ago. Peter and I went to pick her up from school. With everything going on, she quietly told me she remembered our time in Hong Kong.

You are a very special young lady indeed, Alice. I will see you again in a better place.
