It is with a heavy heart that I share my words about Anna Pearl Barrett, a woman who was like a mother to me and so many others. From 1975 to 1989, in the heart of 3rd Ward, she took the neighborhood boys under her wing, giving us more than just guidance, she gave us love, wisdom, and a sense of purpose.

She led us on long walks through the park, teaching us about plants, having us pick berries, and showing us the beauty of nature. She brought us to her family farm in Barrett, Texas, where she shared stories of our histor, our struggles, our resilience, and the strength of our people. Her heritage was directly linked to slavery, yet she carried herself with unwavering dignity, teaching us poise, temperance, and the unshakable belief that we were always good enough.

The last time I saw her, it was like no time had passed. I ran into her at Hermann Park, where she was still taking her walks. We walked together, talked, and laughed. She looked at me and said, "Son, when you gonna come take me for a ride in my fine car?" That moment, like so many others with her, will stay with me forever.

Anna Pearl Barrett didn´t just help raise me, she shaped me into the man I am today. Her legacy lives on in the lessons she taught, the love she gave, and the lives she touched.

Rest in power, Ms. Barrett. Your love and wisdom will never be forgotten.

Mrs. Barrett will always have a special place in my heart. She was my IB Spanish teacher at Bellaire High School and it was her passion for literature, language, and culture that sparked my interest in Spanish poetry. I went in to get a phD in Spanish lit and I´ve been a Spanish professor (specializing in Spanish poetry!) for more than 20 years. Thank you Mrs. Barrett for you dedication to teaching and for planting the seed to my passion for Spanish language and poetry.

I am so sorry to learn about the passing of Ms. Barrett. She was by far the best teacher I ever had. She taught us so much more than Spanish: perserverance, ethics, art history and most importantly, "don't see color, see the person." Thank you to the family for sharing her with us. She improved the lives of so many young people!

She was a very classy, enthralling teacher. I don't think we students knew quite what to make of her, just knew that we had better deliver at her command. So very grateful to have been her student for three years.

I knew Annie Pearl all my life, she was older but we grew up on the same street in Barrett Station. What I remember best about Addie Pearl is her beauty and how smart and confident she always seem to be. I saw her rarely as an adult but when I did she she was always friendly and gracious. My condolences to her family and all the people that loved her.

I had not seen you in years Ms. Barrett but I will always remember being the only senior in your mostly freshman Spanish class at BTW in 1966. You made me sit on the front row to keep me from talking to the girls. I still remember standing in the commencement line as you approached me with this sincere look on you face and said, " Senor Sherrod, why are you in this line you know that you didn't pass my class"! With a stunned look on my face I replied, "Ms. Barrett don't be playing with me now", as the young ladies around me began pulling me out of the line. Then with that classic laughter of yours you admitted that you were just kidding. I will remember you always Ms. Anna Pearl Barrett, you were a fine lady indeed.......Selah

Ms. Anna Pearl, thank you for always being straight forward with no chaser. You will be missed soror.

June 12, 2014

In a PBS interview some years ago, Anna Pearl said she was not Black but "multi-cultural." At her funeral, "I Did it My Way" was sung and people shook their heads and smiled. I knew Anna Pearl from 1970 on. We had few secrets. She did it her way. And in several schools where she taught, they didn't like "her way." Her story of her "evaluations" at Booker T. Washington would make you gasp. One important lesson she taught EVERYONE who knew her well enough to be candid, was that being who she was was difficult on BOTH sides of the racial divide. When she was hired by Harlan Andrews as the FIRST Black (multicultural) teacher in the history of the Bellaire High School (1968), she was escaping an awful teaching situation (and it wasn't in a white school). One should only know what Harlan Andrews said about her in the interview. He was right about her. Look at the praise to Anna Pearl written here. So many from the other side of the racial divide at Bellaire High School.

My heart is very sad to have learned of the passing of my dear, dear friend and former teacher, Dr. Barrett. She taught me Spanish in high school and then many years later she and I were reunited when HCCTV aided her in putting together a documentary on Barrett Station. She and I became very close and shared lunches, talks on the phone, little get-togethers and just kept in touch by sending little "thinking of you" cards and notes. I am truly going to miss this fine lady, whom I love dearly. My condolences to the family. She is gone but will never be forgotten.

Vaya con dios, Senora Barrett. She was a truly gifted and talented teacher not only of Spanish but of life. I loved her passion for the language and her love of Spanish culture and art. She was a trailblazer at Bellaire High School and was never afraid to speak her mind about what was right. I always loved her stories about growing up and what she overcame. She was a truly remarkable person and teacher and will be fondly remembered. Jonathan Stoger, Bellaire High School, Class of 1990.

Anna Pearl Barrett was a God sent especially during a critical time in my life. As a little boy who was hungry for knowledge, Ann Pearl introduced me to history and education about my community through stories, walks in the park, planting gardens, and traveling to Barrett Station. You were the God Aunt of our community (Chenevert and Rosedale). Me and my friends would sit at your feet listening not realizing we were being educated about life. I will miss you and thank you God for the example you left us.

Some years ago, I purchased a book written by my Soror Barrett entitled, 'The Middle Batch Kids'....I always liked to hear her talk....Her speaking and mannerisms were always done 'with a flourish'...you always knew something 'grand' was going to be said by her. And, she had such a sense of humor...I will miss her....
We'll be seeing you, Soror Barrett....

My deepest sympathy to the Barrett family. Ms. Barrett was THE teacher of my entire education. To say that she taught Spanish would not do her justice. I learned more about grammar, syntax, art, and literature in her Spanish classes than I did in all of my English and history classes combined. Most importantly, she taught LIFE. She was the definition of PASSION long before passion became a buzz word. She was magnificent. Our loss is heaven's gain, and she will never be forgotten for what she did for us.

I have known Ms. Barrett for many years, she was such a wonderful person. She was our landlord for almost 20 years. A wonderful person with a good heart will be greatly missed. May she find peace and comfort in her heavenly home.

The world has lost a true treasure in my friend, Soror, colleague and fan, Anna Pearl Barrett. Anna was nicknamed the Duchess of Barrett Station by Bill Vaughan. Anna was given this title because of her birth right as a Barrett of Barrett Station. I will miss her coming to hear me sing at Trinity Episcopal Church, I will miss her big smile at sorority meetings but most of all I will miss how we greeted each other. As the Duchess of Barrett Station I would always bow to her and say "DUCHESS"!! She always laughed heartily when we would do this. My greatest memory of Anna Pearl is that she chose to come to church with me on January 13, 2013, the 100th birthday of our beloved Sorority, Delta Sigma Theta!! I will never forget that I spent Delta's Centennial with one of the GREATEST DELTA'S EVER!!!

My condolences to the Barrett family. Ms Barrett was my 7th & 8th grade homeroom teacher at Booker T. Washington high school in Houston Tx in 1960 & 1961. She enrolled the entire class in her Spanish classes both years. She is the reason I have a "working knowledge" of how to speak Spanish today. She was an exciting & intriguing teacher who will always be fondly remembered. May God grant comfort and peace to her family.

Ms. Barrett was an educator beyond compare. She was so engaged and engaging, always at the ready to teach her Spanish students something important about life. To this day, I recognize the art works of the Spanish masters, because Ms. Barrett taught us art history while teaching us Spanish. She influenced so many Bellaire High School students through the years. May her memory be a blessing to her family and her former students.

My deepest and heartfelt sympathy on Professor Barrett's demise. She was my mentor and teacher during my undergraduate years as a Spanish major at Texas Sothern. From 2004 to 2013, I was priviledged to be a teaching colleague in the Spanish departments at Texas Southern U. and HCCS Central Campus. An Oak tree has fallen. She was one informed and fantastic lady. Rest in Peace, Anna.
