Charles Kilgore Obituary

CHARLES CARROL KILGORE passed away May 15, 2008, at the age of ninety. He was preceded in death by his parents, Theodore Albert and Zonnie Kilgore and brothers Ullmann and Joe Kilgore, all of League City. He is survived by his lovely bride, Daphine. Also, daughter, Nancy Lee Broyan (James) of Dickinson, sons Chuck Kilgore (Amber) of San Leon and Tom Kilgore (Kathy) of Cuero, TX. Nine grandchildren: Clint Kilgore and Brandon Kilgore, Trevor Kilgore (Nadine), Bethany Allen (Thomas), Thomas Kilgore, Vanessa Kilgore, Amy Kilgore, Tavia Prouhet (Jeremy) and Zachary Clark. Five great-grandchildren: Trevor Kilgore, Jr., Alexandra Kilgore, Thomas Allen, Robert Allen, and Austin Allen. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Naomi Kilgore of League City, nieces Clare Drews (Udo), Ted Kilgore (Katrina), Julie Ann Baker (Shef), and Jim Kilgore (Rachel). Charles was born Friday, September 13, 1917 on Waco St. in League City, TX as the youngest child of one of League City's pioneer families. As a young boy, his parents instilled in him the importance of knowledge and integrity. His childhood, steeped in a profound sense of family, principle and patriotism, provided him with the tools to make this world a better place. He worked in the family mercantile store until joining the army in WWII at age 23 and ultimately excelled to the rank of first lieutenant. He served under General Patton in the North African theatre. "Charlie" Kilgore accomplished much in his life, but according to him and his children, marrying Daphine was his best accomplishment. He provided his family with unlimited bountiful unconditional love, guidance, and integrity and will be missed by all. He possessed an amazing sense of optimistic enthusiasm that proved infectious for family and friends. His reliable "Can Do" attitude served his family, community, and country well. Charles was a long time community leader and visionary. Charles orchestrated the development and, therefore, the growth and prosperity of northern Galveston County in many ways. With unwavering commitment to the community, he very successfully "lobbied" in political circles at both the local and state level for favorable legislation. During the early 60's Charles served as League City's first Right of Way Agent, an unpaid position. In this capacity, he envisioned the growth of League City and the creation of FM 270. He considered it important because of high land prices in southeastern Harris County and the low market prices in the League City area mostly due to lack of access roads. Also in 1962, Charles devised a viable means of financing Galveston County Water Authority District No. 1, thereby providing potable and industrial water for the entire county. Charlie served on many boards, committees and organization during his lifetime and had the pleasure of seeing this small ranching town grow into the urban development that it is today. His wife and children would like to express their sincere and heartfelt appreciation for the care provided by the nurses in the five south ward at Clear Lake Regional Hospital; Dr. Neal Watkins for decades of loving care; Reverend Waldon Langley; and, numerous family members and friends. There will be a visitation from 5:00 p.m. 8:00 p.m. on Monday, May 19, 2008 at Crowder Funeral Home in Dickinson, Texas. A memorial service will be conducted at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, May 20, 2008 at Crowder Funeral Home in Dickinson, Texas. Burial will follow at Forest Park East Cemetery in Webster, Texas. The family requests that memorials be made to The Wallisville Heritage Park, P.O. Box 16, Wallisville, TX 77597, (409) 389-2252. Crowder Funeral Home P.O. Box 1292 Dickinson, Texas 281-337-1515

Charlie was a bright, happy person who reflected on League City's farming history with interesting details and a mix of nostalgia and pride. I'm so glad I was able to meet him, talk to him and include his memories in my story.

Although our family has strayed far from Texas, we cherish the connection to this strong Texas pioneer family and love to pass on the stories to our grandchildren. Emma Josephine Kilgore Barkuloo would have been their great-grandmother and she would certainly have been proud of the character and legacy of Charles Carrol Kilgore. Our sympathy goes out to his whole family.

My sympathy and prayers are with your family. Charles and my father, Boyd Kilgore of Houston, corresponded about our shared ancestry. I met him at my father's funeral in 2004. I visited the Wallisville Heritage Park museum just last Friday and saw Charles' Volume of family history "The Story of Three Brothers". What a labor of love. It shows how much he loved and appreciated his family to write down the stories. What a beautiful gift to his family. Sincerely,

I have known Charles Kilgore for all of my life and what a wonderful man he was. Mom and dad use to tell us how they would go into Kilgores and get things on credit and pay it off when they got paid. If it wasn't for him back then I don't know what we would do.
Please know that you are in our prayers and thoughts at this difficult time. Nancy and Daphne if you need me for anything I'm still here in the same place....
Love to all of you,
Betty Goodwin and Debbie Goodwin Cooper

This is a solemn time and the end of an era for the people who knew and loved Charles Kilgore. He is the most honest man I have ever met. So few people like him left, I fear the loss. Say hi to Sharon for me.
Love always Linda
