Charles Williams Obituary

Dr. Charles Hood Williams
1928-2016
Charles Hood ("Doc") Williams, born on June 8, 1928 in Paris, Texas to W. Louis Williams and Maggie Jo (Booth) Williams, passed away peacefully on February 7, 2016 in Kerrville, Texas. He was 87 years old.
After graduating from Paris High School, Charlie served in the United States Navy as a Pharmacist's Mate, 3rd Class. Following his honorable discharge, he focused on his studies at the University of Texas-Austin, where he was a proud member of Delta Tau Delta fraternity, graduating in 1949. Like a true "Delt," he maintained his close ties to the fraternity and his brothers were a source of friendship and support throughout his life. In 1954, Charlie earned
his M.D. from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. He began his practice as a general practitioner in Victoria, Texas, but was quickly drawn to the challenging field of Anesthesiology. He returned to school, pursuing his specialty in the residency programs of Baylor College of Medicine in Houston and the University of Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia.
Charlie returned to Houston in 1960, joining the staff of Methodist Hospital as an anesthesiologist, and in 1963 accepted a clinical appointment to Baylor College of Medicine. In 1965, he moved his practice to St. Joseph Hospital in Houston, eventually becoming the Academic Chief of Anesthesiology and serving as Director of Intensive, Respiratory and Coronary Care services. While at St. Joseph, he organized the first Coronary Care Unit in the southern United States. In 1994, Charlie left St. Joseph and attempted retirement in the Texas Hill Country. However, the challenges of and satisfaction gained from helping patients proved to be too strong to resist. He returned to medicine, becoming the acting administrator of Starlite Village Hospital in Center Point and practicing addiction medicine at Kerrville's MHMR Center until 2009, when he finally retired. Though his interest in medicine was paramount, Charlie enjoyed both the friendships that he developed and the natural beauty of the Hill
Country. He became an avid nature photographer, sharing his photographs and their stories freely with anyone who showed an interest. Charlie embraced life fully and encouraged his children to do the same.
Charlie was predeceased by his parents and three brothers, Louis B. Williams, John W. ("Dub") Williams and Joe R. ("Todd") Williams. He is survived by his daughter, Catherine H. Williams, and his two sons and their families, Charles A. Williams, spouse Randa, and grandson Harrison, and Corbett H. Williams and spouse Karen Cheng Williams.
The family would like to thank all the wonderful people that gave him support during his time of need. Special thanks to Jennifer and Lee, Hilltop Village and Sid Petersen Hospice in Kerrville, Texas.
A private service was held by the family.
To honor his love of learning and of the community, in lieu of customary remembrances, memorial gifts may be made to Bandera County Public Library, P.O. Box 1568, Bandera, Texas 78003.
