Christian Kuether Obituary

Christian Lyman Kuether
12/14/1941 - 08/16/2024
Christian Lyman Kuether, the first child born to Carl Albert Kuether, a biochemist, and Edith Lyman Kuether, a concert violinist, showed an early aptitude for music and boundless curiosity. Music and science guided his education and his passions.
Chris was awarded a Bachelor of Arts from Indiana University and joined the Ophthalmology Department faculty of Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. Later, he joined the staff in the Ophthalmology Department of the University of Houston, retiring in 2019, after over 50 years of dedicated service.
In 1971, Chris was inducted into the American Academy of Optometry as a non-clinician educator. He maintained this fellowship throughout his career.
Chris was predeceased by his parents and his son, Carl Adams Kuether. He is survived by his wife, Susan Russell Kuether, his two daughters Marta Mayer (George) of Tepoztlan Morelos, Mexico, and Virginia Vernor of Houston, and his sister, Elizabeth Kuether Piner (Harry) of Guilford, Connecticut. Chris is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and grandchildren. He loved them all.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that in Chris' memory, donations may be made to The Houston Civic Symphony, Post Office 770032, Houston, Texas 77215. Civicsymphony.org

Sue and family, So sorry that we can't keep them forever. Chris is playing music in Heaven, hopefully with my dad and other musical folks in Heaven. Chris is quite a lovely, learned and kind person. We have been and will continue to miss him. Love Alicia

My condolences to Chris' family. I met Chris at UHCO and although I didn't spend much time with him, any time that I did was always thoughtful and sometimes amusing. He was a unique and talented individual.

My condolences to his family. I worked with and apprenticed under Chris at the University of Houston for many years. I learned more in those short years than I can ever describe here, not just machining, fabrication, design & engineering but many things from electronics to optics to psychology, and music and more... I often thought of him as an equivalent to a modern-day Leonardo Da Vinci, he was so talented in so many aspects of his life.

On behalf of the Jazz Medics Big Band, of which our friend and excellent musician contributed for many years playing bass with us, I offer our condolences to Chris´ family. His contribution to the band was memorable and quite professional. We are all so sorry to hear of his passing.
