Daniel Peter Morrison
07/16/1936 - 04/20/2025
Daniel Peter Morrison was born in Cleveland, Ohio on July16, 1936, to Max Morrison and Rose Eilberg Morrison, the second of three children. He passed away on Sunday, April 20, 2025, at his home in Houston, Texas. He graduated from Heights High School, Ohio University and Tufts School of Medicine and did residencies in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Stanford University and Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He was lured to Houston from his faculty position at Einstein by his friend Dr. Shelly Liss. Along with Dr. Robert Sine, their other friend from their residency days, they began Rehabilitation Associates. The group would grow to include nine physicians and provide care for patients in Houston and in the surrounding areas.
In 1975, Dan became Medical Director of the Rehabilitation Unit at the newly opened Medical Center Del Oro Hospital. He had a loyal staff of therapists who admired and followed him with each move. The unit became particularly known for its treatment of closed head injury patients. He was instrumental in encouraging parents of these injured young people to form the Texas Head Injury Foundation and was recognized for being a founding board member of the organization. He was also given an award by the Houston Association for Communication Disorders. Despite the severity of his patients' injuries, he felt that being truthful could coexist with hopefulness. His kindness did not go unnoticed by those who knew him.
Retiring relatively early, Dan continued to fish at his Galveston Bay house, accruing many stories of adventures with his fishing buddies. Always good with his hands, he restored more than one house after Galveston's hurricanes. He enjoyed viewing and making art, using his talent to make wooden sculptures, some of which were shown and sold in a Houston gallery. As a member of the Retired Physicians' Organization, he received the 2015 Claude Carr Cody III award for achievement in Arts and Literature. When not fishing or sculpting, he could be found nurturing his home garden, spending many hours tending to his flowers and plants and generally digging in the dirt.
Dan was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Victor Morrison, and sister, Connie Baumann. He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Riki Weinstein, and his three beloved daughters and their spouses: Beth Broodo (Kenneth Chaim), Leslie Abrahami (Adam), and Marisa Morrison (Mike Simone). He is also survived by his much adored 10 grandchildren: Natalia Orenstein (Elliot), Max Gutman, Leah Esther Margolies (Rafi), Rachel Rosenberg (Hillel), Mordechai Broodo, Eli Abrahami, Natanel Abrahami, Shmuel Abrahami, Isaac Simone, and Lila Simone. He also cherished his three great-grandchildren: Teddy Orenstein, Azzi Margolies, and Nechemia Rosenberg. His brothers-in-laws, Terry Baumann and Jay Weinstein, as well as nieces, nephews, cousins and treasured friends also survive him. To all of them he was a caring, kind, and honorable man.
The family would like to thank the cadre of compassionate caregivers who provided comfort and encouragement to him during his recent illness. These include J.J., Tabitha, Paulina, Mor, Linh, Teska, and others.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, at Beth Israel Memorial Garden, 1101 Antoine Dr., Houston, Texas 77055.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, 1001 Bissonnet St., Houston, TX 77005 (
