David Pena Obituary

David Luis Pena age 69, passed away March 28, 2012 at the VA Hospital in Houston, Tx. David was born in Brownsville, Texas to Adolfo Pena Jr (deceased) and Berta Trevino Pena on September 21, 1942. Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 25 yrs, Lidia San Miguel Pena (Houston,Tx), his only child, David Luis Pena Jr (Iris) of Houston, Tx. and his beautiful and much loved grandchildren: Lily, Jazzy, and David III, his 90 yrs old Mother Berta (Mission, Tx), and his brothers: Adolfo Pena III (Fito) (Santa Monica, Ca.), Ruben Pena (Riverside, Ca)., Ben Pena ( Katy, Tx.) and sisters: Alma Bailey (Mission, Tx), Melinda Garza (Houston, Tx), Dilia Giguere (Dd) (Wheatland, Ca) and numerous nieces and nephews. David graduated from Brownsville High in May 1961. In June 1961 he, along with 5 other close friends, enlisted in the U. S. Marine Corp. Since he was a child, his interest in tanks grew, and when he joined the Marines, he was assigned to a tank company and eventually, he was designated as Tank Commander for the 1st Tank Battalion (Flame Platoon) in Camp Pendleton, Ca. He served overseas in Okinawa: 3rd. Tank Battalion, Bravo Company until his return to the states in 1965. He received an Honorable Discharge in May 3, 1965. David was a life-long member of the La Primera Iglesia Presbyteriana Mexicana of Brownsville, Tx, he was active in the Former/ Retired Marines Association and very active with members of the Class of 61 of Brownsville High, helping plan many of their reunions. David loved keeping up with friends via email, phone calls, and visits. For many years, before he became very sick, David was known by friends and family as the" Prayer Warrior", always keeping a list of those who asked for prayer. His God was most important to him, followed by being a proud American, and last, but not least, David was very proud to be a Marine. For as long as we can remember, David was never without his Marine Corp cap, a Marine Corp Tee shirt and the little American flag that he would attach to his cane with a big rubber band! In his last years, however, the main love and joy of his life were his three grandchildren: Lily, Jazzy and David who were his reason for living. When he got to see them, they were the best pain medicine he could get. David will be missed by his family and his many friends. We mourn his passing, but know that because of the promises of the Bible ( John 3:16 ), David is in God's presence, where he is now at peace, praising God with the Angels and free from pain forever. Join the Pena family for a "Celebration of David's life" on Monday, April 2, 2012, at the Paradigm Funeral Home, 5455 Dashwood, Bellaire, Tx 77401 (phone # 713-933-0356) from 5 p.m. till 8 p.m

Davey, I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your Dad. I know only too well what the pain of losing a parent is. Even though our earthly fathers are no longer here with us, knowing that they are in the presence of our Heavenly Father brings comfort and hope that one day we will see them again.

I'd like to share one of my memories of your father...Early on, when he started studying the bible, he asked me one day what my favorite verse was and then surprised me with a wooden plaque carved with...Galatians 2:20...my favorite version is one in a song..."I am crucified with Christ, never the less I live, yet it is not I that lives but Christ liveth in my life, and this life that I now live, I live by the faith in the Son of God, who loved me enough, to be nailed to the Old Rugged Cross"

Your Dad understood that Love and what Christ did for us and for that we can celebrate knowing one day we will see him again. Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this difficult time.

Lydia, I now especially relish the moments I was able to spend with David at our class reunion last October. I first met David when we were pre-first grade students at First Ward Elementary, where the renowned Castaneda sisters were our teachers. You and I met when you, David and I were first grade students in Ms. Maria Castaneda's class. I still recall the delight with which David informed me of his marriage to you. You were a blessing to each other. May the peace of our Lord surround you, David, and your family in this time loss and need.

Lidia, no words can make easier your loss now but be at ease knowing that David and you are loved. My life long memory of David will be his ready smile to all and never hearing him say anything negative about anyone. In life as in death he will ever be a proud Marine whose country is thankful for his service. May God bless you and your family. "Hail to thee our Alma Mater........"

Lydia, David, Iris, grandchildren:
It is for certain that David is now driving his tank in the golden streets of heaven, for he truly believed that the streets were guarded by United States Marines. As children (cousins) we were caught by Mama Maria calling each other "Huerco and Huerca" and got our spanking, but it became a thrill for us to greet each other with that name. I was fortunate to carry on so many interesting emails with him in his later years, sharing all the memories we made at 5th and Jefferson. You no doubt have just as many memories that will help you cope with this great loss. Lydia, as he always told me, "You were the best thing that ever happened to him!"

Lydia and Family,

My prayer for you all is that you rest in knowing that David is with his Best Friend, His Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. I truly enjoyed those special times we shared at our reunions after so many years. I discovered how many of our recruit platoon were now deeply committed to serving Christ. David was at the top of the list with his faith and boldness to share the Gospel.

God's grace and peace to you all from Jim Irwin, and the rest of Plt. 234, Fox Co.,2nd Btn.,RTR, MCRD San Diego, CA, 1 Sept. 1961. Oooorah.
