Denise Duffy Obituary

Denise Ellen Duffy
06/06/1957 - 06/27/2025
For most who made her acquaintance, Denise ("D") Duffy, née Stewart, would become the most thoughtful person they would ever know.
Born in Brooklyn on the 13th anniversary of D-Day, she exuded grace and beauty. The eldest child of Pat and Mary Stewart, D cherished lifelong bonds with sister, Tara; brother, Patrick, his wife, Patricia; and an extended family.
Smart, curious, and an excellent swimmer, she thrived at The Mary Lewis Academy in Jamaica, Queens. D later studied at SUNY Binghamton, earning a degree in accounting. After college, iconic Cunard Line, LTD hired her in their NYC offices. She met her future husband, Michael Duffy, at West Point in 1978. They married in 1980, and the next day she flew with him to his first military assignment in Germany, where she was immediately hired in the Army accounting office. Within 3 years, she was the Supervisory Accountant of the unit.
After returning to the US from Germany in 1983, V V K R engineers hired D as their controller in Alexandria, VA. She studied for and passed the CPA exam in a single sitting. In 1988, D was hired as the controller at Flack + Kurtz engineers and then hired as the Chief Financial Officer ("CFO") at Beyer Blinder Belle ("BBB") in NYC. She was a trusted, reliable business leader and friend. She served almost 30 years as CFO at BBB-including a span of internationally "remote" work from Spain during Michael's post-Army career-until her retirement in 2018.
Her career and life travels spanned the globe: 25 moves, over 120 countries, and friends in every port. She also navigated 12 years of health challenges alongside MD Anderson Cancer Center's team of unparalleled cancer specialists in Texas. In retirement, D served on MDA Patient Family Advisory Program Board and its Ethics Advisory Board, advocating for others-even (and especially) while a patient herself.
Deeply grateful and devoid of self-pity, D's irrepressible happiness continued unabated during years of recovery and rehabilitation, through the morning of her unexpected but gentle passing midday on June 27, 2025. In lieu of flowers/gifts, D requests donations be made to the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, on-line at https://gifts.mdanderson.org/ and directed to support the work of Drs. Carlos Kamiya Matsuoka, Franco DeMonte, and Matthew Hanasono-whose collective skills kept D vibrant and with us for more than a decade. Our beloved Denise's ashes will be placed in the columbarium at Arlington National Cemetery in VA.

Denise lived an incredible life, contributed so much to others and to the world, and did so bravely. It´s a terrible tragedy that she´s been taken from Mike, her family, and all of us, so soon.
My heartfelt condolences and sympathy to Mike and to Denise's family.

Michael, Denise is in heaven sharing that warm smile and soft reassuring voice with everyone. When Jackie and I met both of you we knew we had met two special people who would enrich our lives. We miss Denise but someday we will all met in heaven.

Michael, we offer our deepest condolences to you and your family. Denise touched our hearts in countless ways, and her memory will forever be a part of us.

It feels like just yesterday - twelve short months ago - that we were laughing together, making plans for our September trip to West Point. "D" was the one keeping us organized and informed every step of the way. She was our "guiding light" in so many ways.

Denise had a radiant presence - a warmth and energy that drew people in. She carried herself with grace and kindness, love in her heart, and a strength and resilience that were truly inspiring. Her zest for life and unwavering positivity in the face of challenges were evident to all who met her.

She was a true and rare blessing - the kind of person who made everyone around her feel seen, valued, and welcomed. There was something truly special about her, and we are so fortunate that our paths in life crossed.

The love between you and Denise was visible to everyone - spoken not just in words, but in every action. It was a rare and beautiful gift, and it will continue to shine brightly through all who were lucky enough to witness it.

Prayers lifted up and may your beautiful memories guide you through this time.

Love, Jeff and Kathy Orlowski

Denise Duffy (CFO), Marilyn Marullo (CAO), and I (Managing Partner) had the privilege and responsibility of operating as the management team of the 12-partner architectural firm Beyer Blinder Belle. Denise was at the center of all decisions - often originating creative strategies - that our remarkably cohesive partnership made in growing BBB from a highly respected local NYC firm to an internationally renowned practice. Denise´s focused professionalism and moral compass earned her the respect of all at BBB and the wider world of our large network of colleagues. We mourn her loss and send condolences to Mike and her large family and devoted friends.

dearest michael, patrick, patricia, tara, aunt bernadette and the multitude in denise´s orbit ~ i only wish i had known denise "on my own" rather than vicariously BUT even that has been tremendous!... aunt bernadette introduced me to and chronicled denise to the extent that i almost forget that we only met a few times.... i am in awe of denise and her impact on everyone and everything she´s had anything to do with....she´s the woman we all wish we could be and the human being whose impact on the world is unrivaled....so much with her hands tied and a positive spirit that is over the moon.
gracious, lovely and absolutely beyond exceptional.... love
