Edwin Booth Obituary

Feb. 12, 1912 - Apr. 19, 2006 EDWIN BROWN BOOTH was born on Feb. 12, 1912, in Timpson, Tx., to Edwin and Fannie Brown Booth. He moved to Austin, where he lived with his aunt and uncle, Margaret and Herman Brown, and attended the University of Texas. He majored in journalism and creative writing, studying with famed writer/historian J. Frank Dobie. He took a job with the Austin American Statesman, and married the girl across the street, Elizabeth Thomas, in 1936, and started a family. During WW2 he flew planes on the weekends with the National Guard and covered local news for the paper. He joined Brown & Root, founded by his uncles Herman and George Brown, and moved to Houston after the war. He was in charge of Public Relations for the firm, entertaining journalists, foreign Consuls, business people and politicians. When he retired from Brown & Root, he started a travel agency, Atlas Travel, in Houston. In the early 1970's Mr. Booth refurbished his mother's house in Timpson, where they stayed while planning and building a new home on the family farm. It is in this house, a few yards from the place where his father was born, that he and his wife lived for the rest of their lives. Elizabeth died there March 23, 2002, and there Brown Booth passed away peacefully at the age of 94. Four children, Mary Elizabeth Bouchard of Evanston, Il., Thomas Brown Booth of NYC, NY, Margarett Ann Booth of Horseshoe Bay, Tx., and Edwin Fulton Booth of Crosby, Tx., four grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren survive him. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Fannie Brown Booth Library, 619 Tenaha St., Center, TX 75935, or to the Hospice of Deep East Texas, 907 N. Mound, Nacogdoches, TX 75961.

It was my honor to work for Mr. Booth for 18 years at Atlas Travel. He was a true southern gentleman. All of the lives he touched at Atlas Travel were brighter for having known him.

Mr Booth was a true gentleman and a honorable man. It was my pleasure to have worked for Braniff Airways in Houston in the late 70's and thus our paths crossed. That crossing was better for me.
