Elvie Bischoff Obituary
Elvie DeLois (Staples) Bischoff
1929-2020
Elvie DeLois Staples Bischoff joined the Lord on Monday, December 14, 2020 at the age of 91. Elvie was born in El Dorado, Arkansas on September 7, 1929. On June 28, 1947, Elvie married Oswald Julius "OJ" Bischoff with whom she shared a full and loving marriage for 65 years. Together, they created a gathering place for their family at Lake Limestone where they spent many cherished moments.
Elvie arrived in Houston with her single mother in the aftermath of the Great Depression. From a very young age through the end of her life, Elvie was above all a caregiver. As the oldest of her cousins, who also relocated from Arkansas to Houston, Elvie watched over younger family members while her mother and aunts worked to support their families while the men of the family were fighting in World War II. Elvie graduated from John H. Reagan High School in Houston's Heights neighborhood.
After marrying OJ, Elvie devoted herself to doting on her three children, Richard, Dee and Mike as a stay-at-home mom. Later, she worked at Joske's Department Store before she and OJ started their business, Approval Stamp Works. With their son Mike, daughter Dee, and her husband, Jerry, they grew their business, which eventually employed 85 people and produced over 6,000 custom marking devices per day. They sold Approval Stamp Works to Johnson Worldwide Associates in 1991. OJ and Elvie moved to the Woodlands and enjoyed retirement for several years together before they moved back to Central Houston. Selflessly and lovingly, Elvie spent much time caring for her stepfather, Robert Morris, her mother, Lutee Box Staples Morris, and toward the end of his life, her husband OJ.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Lutee Box Staples Morris and John Luther Staples, and the love of her life husband, OJ. Surviving Elvie are her three children, Richard Lee Bischoff, I and wife Linda, Dee Linda Jackson and husband Jerry, Michael Lynn Bischoff, Sr. and wife Colleen; eleven grandchildren, Regan Jackson Jurick and husband Keith, Jeremy Joseph Jackson and wife Sarah, Bridgette Brandell Bischoff, Anthony Joseph Heins and wife Alex, Richard Lee Bischoff, II and wife Jessica, Jonathan Paul Heins and wife Patrice, Michael Lynn Bischoff, Jr. and wife Julia, Kathryn Bischoff Glover and husband Thomas, Lauren Elizabeth Bischoff, Alexandra Mullane Bischoff, and Andrew Thomas Bischoff; and twelve great grandchildren, Hodges Elizabeth Jackson, Maddox Paul Jurick, Elvie Anne Jackson, Henry Paul Heins, Annabel Grace Heins, Evelyn Marie Heins, Meadow Florence Jurick, Amelia Blake Heins, Audrey Paulina Bischoff, Lydia Pearl Heins, Theodore Michael Bischoff and Bennett Edward Bischoff.
Throughout her life, family was her absolute priority. Known warmly to her grandchildren and great grandchildren as "Nanny," she greeted every one of them with a "kissie, kissie." She was the matriarchal glue that held her family together and was dearly loved. Big breakfasts at her lake house, huge servings of homemade ice cream, yearly Christmas celebrations at her home and other family gatherings she orchestrated brought her family together and kept them close. Elvie was exceptionally funny, quick-witted, and greeted everyone she met with a glowing smile.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, December 19, 2020 from 12:30 to 2:00 PM at Earthman Resthaven Funeral Home & Cemetery, 13102 North Freeway, Houston, Texas 77060. A private funeral service and burial will be held immediately after the visitation, with the Reverend Laurens "Larry" Hall officiating. Serving as pallbearers during the service are Elvie's grandchildren, Jeremy, Keith, Anthony, Lee, Jonathan, Michael, Thomas and Andrew. In lieu of customary remembrances, the family requests that memorial contributions be directed to The Beacon, 1117 Texas Avenue, Houston, TX 77002, or Rise School of Houston, 5618 H. Mark Crosswell, Jr. Street, Houston, Texas 77021.
