Frank Whiteside Obituary

Frank Dwight Whiteside
1953-2015
PORTRAIT OF A LIFE WELL-LIVED
FRANK DWIGHT WHITESIDE
On June 20, 1953, Frank Delano Whiteside and Mary Breda gave birth to a wonderful baby boy, Frank Dwight Whiteside in historical 5th Ward, Houston, Texas. Frank graduated from Kashmere Garden High School in 1971. He continued his academic pursuits at Tuskegee Institute, the now Tuskegee University and was awarded a Bachelor of Science in Political Science degree in 1979. In 2008, Frank was awarded the degree of Masters of Arts in Education, Curriculum and Instruction by the University of Phoenix. He was a Ph.D. candidate in Higher Education Administration at the University of Phoenix.
Frank was a 20-year educator in Houston ISD. He started at Dogan Elementary school, where in 1995 he was Teacher of the year. He moved on to Sanderson Elementary school where he was a second grade teacher for many years. He served most recently as the District's Manager of Elementary Curriculum for Social Studies. Prior to that, he was a Social Studies specialist and model lesson writer in the Curriculum department. Frank spent his life in the service of others. He dedicated his life to education through his work in HISD and his Church. Frank was a lifelong learner and scholar. His work as a social studies specialist and then manager will live on in the curriculum he shaped for the district. He felt passionately about ensuring students learn history and citizenship so they could make a difference in the world. He had high expectations for all students and expected them to reach their full potential. He was a wonderful trainer and preacher and he came to life in front of an audience. Frank had a dry sense of humor and always had a comment to make you smile. After making a statement, Frank would pause and wait for a reaction followed by an infectious grin. In addition to his sense of humor, Frank had a beautiful singing voice and it was always a treat on the rare occasions when he could be persuaded to sing at a work function. Frank had a good heart and opened his home to those in need. He did what he could to care of others. His knowledge of social studies and passion for learning will live on in the students and teachers he served.
Frank's social life was full. He was a long standing member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. He pledged Gamma Epsilon Chapter (The Lighthouse Chapter) of the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc in Tuskegee Institute (University), Alabama in the Fall of 1972. He was also an active member of the Houston Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.
Frank served as Youth Pastor and organist for Pleasant Hill Baptist Church for several years. Eventually after joining his present church, Living Word Fellowship Church in Houston, Texas, he became the Associate Worship Pastor. He worshiped there for almost 17 years. Frank was a consummate musician. Frank was also the organist and choirmaster at his Church. At Church, many longed to hear his lovely singing voice and be blessed during praise and worship. On quite a few occasions he blessed the congregation with his very well tailored sermons. He preached his last sermon a week before he passed on, on December 28, 2014 during the 8am service with the title, "Simple Lesson - Hard To Learn", Mark 4:35-41. He was ordained as a minister of the gospel of Christ at the Bethel Missionary Baptist Church in Tuskegee, Alabama, where he was also the Minister of music, more than 35 years ago. Preceding that he also was minister of music at the Mt. Calvary Missionary Christian Church in Tuskegee Institute (University), Tuskegee, Alabama. Frank was a featured soloist for Tuskegee Institute(University), choir; The Golden Voices.
Frank was simple hearted, easy to get along with and had a sense of style, always wanting to look good in his many sweaters and tailored clothing's. He was a devoted friend and mentor to quite a few people.
He was preceded in death by his godmother; Wilma J. Ganther, godfather; Leo Ganther Snr., father; Frank Delano Whiteside, his brother; Danny Lindorff Jernigan and sister; Wilhelmina J. Williams.
We join in celebration of Frank's life with his family and friends; Mother: Mary Hope of Oakland, California. Siblings: D'Andrea Perry (Charles) & Maedana Johnson (Michael) of Houston, Texas. Frank and I were ordained together at the Bethel Baptist Church in Tuskegee, AL. Frank was truly a big brother. He was a blessing to my young family and even more, an inspiration to live for the Lord. I can remember, I shared a mix tape with him that included a whole lot of Commissioned and others that were my youthful listening of the day. Now, almost 35 years later, I'm grateful that God allowed our connection and conversations. I just had memory of him and found this page.

To the family, I am one amongst many that he blessed. Continue his legacy and many more will receive of God's power because of who Rev. Whiteside is to the Kingdom of God.

Thanks, Bro. I still remember...

Mr. Whiteside was my 5th grade teacher at Dogan Elementy in Fifth Ward. I remember him well, looking back all these years. He once told me John your going to make it out of here, I can just feel it, I hope I'm right. Mr. Whiteside was like a second father to me in many ways. He was right I made it out and I am doing well.

I have been living in south Texas for the past ten years and I always planned to look up Mr. Whiteside. To shake his hand and tell him this is what I did in life. I imagined him talking to me and being proud of me. Sadly, it was here recently that my brother who also became an educator told me that Mr. Johnson (his 5th grade teacher) told him that he had passed away. Thank you Frank D. Whiteside for talking to us bad kids at Dogan Elementary in Fifth Ward.

To the Whiteside family,
Unfortunately I'm just now seeing this post of Frank's passing as I was looking for him on Facebook...very sadden. Living in Galveston at the time, I met Frank in a class at TSU back in the late 90's after we paired up for a class assignment. I was working on my teacher certification. We never really seen much of each other outside of class but just in that semester I knew what kind of person Frank was. He loved the Lord first and foremost as I gather this through our conversations. Teaching school was also another passion of his. Frank was always well-dressed and mild-mannered. He had a sense of humor and was just a likable person. He will be truly missed by many. May the Lord continue to comfort and strengthen the family in a special way. R.I.P.

To The Whiteside Family,
Mr. Whiteside was my elementary school teacher and I never got to tell him how much I appreciated him. He was very passionate and caring. I thank him because without him I don't think I would have made it this far in my life. His lessons have helped me throughout my career.

I only just today learned of Frank's passing. This man held me up when I was falling. He taught me to look beyond the pain of the moment. He showed me how to keep living even after the very deepest of hurts.

His insight into student needs made me a better teacher and a better administrator. His wise guiding questions led us as educators to develop lessons that stretched students and opened their minds. He was a great educator, a great friend and a great man.

RIP Frank. Te quiero mucho. Te aprecio en una forma sin palabras. Que suerte la mía en conocerte y decirte amigo.

I met Frank at Tuskegee and he was truly amazing. A gentle man of the highest. I sung in the choir with him and yes,he could sing! He set the bar for the Golden Voice choir. I looked for Frank each time I visited Tuskegee. I am sorry we did not have a chance to reconnect.

To the family of Brother Frank Whiteside, I knew him as one of the fellow Kappa brothers that led traditional and chapter related songs during homecoming. A Trip To Heaven

I took a trip to heaven
But only in my mind
I wanted to know what it's like
To leave all you love behind.
So I closed my eyes, and started to see
Just how beautiful heaven can be.

I could see the pearly gates of white
and behind them was the most radiant light.
I saw an angel as she was passing by
so incredibly beautiful that a tear fell from my eye.
Everyone looked perfect and with the angels they did sing
There are no earthly words to describe the beauty of their wings.

As I sat on a bench in the most incredible garden
I asked God for all of my sins to be pardoned
I took one last look at all of the beauty around
And when I opened my eyes, it was peace that I found.

Now it's time for me to say Good-Bye
So long Frank, I'm really going to miss you my Brother. Peace be still.

I shall treasure the memory of Frank's joyous singing and playing for programs and his dedication to the Curriculum Department of Houston ISD. My thoughts and prayers are with the family at this time.

To the family of Frank Whiteside: My prayers go out to you during this time. I too met Frank at Tuskegee and had the privilege of being initiated into Kappa Alpha Psi under him. Frank was always kind to us as "Scrollers" and always made sure we ate breakfast and went to church on Sunday morning. He always shared words of hope and inspiration. He also had a wonderful sense of humor. He will truly be missed. May you rest in peace with the Lord my brother.

To the Whiteside Family:

Please accept my condolences. Frank provided his Fraternity Brothers of Kappa Alpha Psi, Tuskegee Institute, with many fond memories. Frank was a good man with a caring and giving heart. He was honest, and committed to what he believed in. I had the opportunity to sit down with Frank for a couple of hours during the 2013 homecoming and he shared some of life's highs and lows. I will always remember Frank during the times after joining the Frat and we would have those intellectual exchanges. May he Lord bless his soul.
Respectfully, Russell Green

Another golden voice has been added to God's Heavenly Choir; that being the voice of Frank D. Whiteside. I shall always remember him and the many good times we shared while he was in Tuskegee, AL and his leadership shared at the Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, Tuskegee. His smile would light up wherever he was and his laughter as well. We will miss Frank but we know to be present with the Lord, we have to be absent from our physical bodies. Well done Frank, thy good and faithful servant. May God's grace and mercy be of strength to the Whiteside Family.

So, so sorry to read of Frank's passing. He was truly a wonderful man. He sang at the memorial service for my husband and we were all blessed. I regret that I cannot be at his service.

Frank Whiteside! What a good frat brother. I met Frank in our Tuskegee days. What a time! Frank was a good friend and I will cherish his memory forever. His voice praised the Lord to the highest order. The Kappas were beneficiary's of that golden voice too! Singing on the STEPS weekly and at Homecoming for the Nupes, Whooooo... we really loved his soaring vocals bringing the house down singing our fraternity songs. He really brought the heart and soul out of a lyrics on a piece of paper. He is truly missed in our world. Thank you Whiteside family for this gift to Kappa. Erik Jackson Spring '82 10DD

I had the pleasure of working with Mr. Whiteside this past year and he will greatly be missed. His smile, his sense of humor, and intelligence were just a few things that I admired about him. We have lost a very special human being who brought laughter and joy to many. He was a true example of integrity and passion. Houston ISD has lost a great human being.
