Gary Rollins Karter
08/04/1948 - 07/19/2025
Gary Rollins Karter, a native Houstonian, born on August 4, 1948, passed away peacefully on July 19, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, love, and unforgettable memories.
Gary graduated from Memorial High School, in Houston, Class of 1966, and went on to earn his degree in Business Administration from the University of Oklahoma. He dedicated his professional life to the banking industry, where he not only built a successful career but also established lifelong friendships that he cherished deeply.
An Eagle Scout and a man of great character, Gary lived a life rooted in generosity and selflessness. He always put others first, bringing warmth, kindness, and thoughtfulness to every relationship. Whether it was cheering on the Houston Astros and the Texans, traveling the world with family or friends, or enjoying a PGA tournament, Gary embraced life with passion and enthusiasm, always ready for an adventure. He was a kid at heart-eager to ride every roller coaster at amusement parks and always the first to order more dessert than anyone could possibly eat.
Gary's interests were as diverse as his heart was big. He loved fine wine, good food, and especially Oklahoma football, where he served as a student athletic trainer. He was also a collector of many things that he loved, however, his greatest collection was the rich tapestry of memories he created with those around him. Whether he was watching an exciting game or enjoying a good piano player-Gary embraced every moment with enthusiasm.
Gary was a devoted husband, stepfather and grandfather. He adored his wife, Sharron, and grandchildren, and he could often be found attending their games, recitals, and special events. His love for family was immeasurable, and he took great joy in sharing his time and energy with those he loved most. He was especially fond of Aviara, near San Diego, where he enjoyed countless memories with his family.
Despite his health struggles in later years, Gary remained a pillar of strength and resilience. He faced each challenge with courage and grace, never letting it diminish his positive spirit or his love for life.
Gary is preceded in death by his parents, Irene and Edward Rollins Karter and survived by his beloved wife Sharron, his stepsons Randy Sims (Sherri) and Shane Ellisor, grandchildren Sarah Jane and Rett, sister Gayle Umbach and her husband Keith, and many dear friends who will carry his memory with them. His generosity, joy, and laughter will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that any donations be made to MD Anderson Cancer Center, P.O. Box 4486, Houston, TX 77210-4486 or

May Gary's memory be a blessing, and may we all strive to live our lives as fully and kindly as he did.
