Gustavo Alemán Obituary

GUNNERY SERGEANT GUSTAVO ALEMÁN JR., 33, of Channelview, passed away August 2, 2007 after a long battle with cancer. Gunnery Sergeant Alemán was born on August 2, 1974 and was a 1993 graduate of North Shore High School. He enlisted into the United States Marine Corps on February 3, 1994 at Marine Corps Recruiting Station Houston. In December 1999 Gunnery Sergeant Alemán returned to Recruiting Station Houston and served as a Recruiter until being transferred in April 2003. From March 2005 to June 2005 he served in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom III. In his most recent assignment Gunnery Sergeant Alemán served as Personnel Chief of Headquarters and Service Battalion, Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego, CA. Gunnery Sergeant Aleman's personal awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (gold star in lieu of second award). Gunnery Sergeant Alemán had been promoted to Gunnery Sergeant on February 1, 2007, just one day after having received a stem cell transplant. The promotion ceremony was held outside his hospital room at the University of California San Diego Thornton Hospital in La Jolla, CA. Gunnery Sergeant Alemán was a United States Marine who lived for his country and gave the Marine Corps 13 years of his life. He was the epitome of what every Marine should aspire to become. He was a valiant and courageous man who was admired and loved by many. He faced his longest and hardest battle, cancer, with honor, courage, and commitment and fought to the very end. Gunnery Sergeant Alemán is survived by his wife Rosario and their three children, Miguel, Daniel, and Gabriel of San Diego, parents: Gustavo and Rosa Alemán; sisters: Rosa DeLeón and Brenda Garza; brother, David Alemán, all of Channelview, maternal grandparents: Ambrocio and Maria Luisa Gonzalez of Monterrey, Nuevo León, Mexico. I was young not wise and crazy. Then Sgt Aleman came into my life . No father figure and he knew it. I sat and interviewed with him and signed the first time we spoke.. And until boot camp boy I put him through hell..Getting me out of tickets going to court for me and even going to jail and him coming to get me out.. Then he became a good friend that I knew that cared for me as a person and my well being...I can go on forever just taking time out of his day to come eat lunch with me to check in on me.. At my first duty station in Oki I ran into him at the PX and he broke the news I made sure I went to his blood drive at north shore to see if I was a match but wasn't.. He told me he will be alright.. He was a tuff gentleman.. Now i thank him for making me the person I am today.. Now I'm wise and make good choices due to the Marines.. I thank him and his family for putting me on the path of success.. Oorah Sgt ALeman Thanks for being there for me then and being my angel now.. Semper Fi !

It is with the heaviest on hearts that I write this as for the first time today I learn of the loss of the man that turned my life around. I remember him running me into shape to join the Marine Corps. I remember the birth of his son. I remember being a troubled young man who had it not been for "Sgt" Aleman (at the time) I would not be the father and husband that I am today. He was like a father he listened and mentored and never judged. I am a better man for having known him. I will forever cherish his memory..... Jimmy N Rubio

Time after time I would go online and type your name. Its amazing all the stories and clippings from news paper and articles that I have found about you. I just never had the courage to write to you! I miss you so much! The first year was the hardest. Although it still is, I think our family has grown closer and have found ways to cope with your loss.
I wish you were here, to see your baby sister and to see all that she has accomplished! Now most of the holidays are spent at my house. When I look around and see the family gathered around, it breaks my heart to see your missing. These last few summers we have had the boys with us and that makes us complete! With Danny and Gabriel we have a part of you! Before you passed away, I was blessed to have you be a part of my wedding! Daniel and I will be celebrating our 3 year wedding anniversary tomorrow! We don’t have any kids yet, but we do have an English bull dog that we love so much! My dog makes me think of you! The bulldog was the mascot of the marines! And you had one tattooed on your arm! I wish you could see her, even though I'm sure you have!
Now that Daniel and I have our own house, sometimes I'm left alone, but yet I'm never scared! I think you are with me sometimes! A year after you passed, Rosy encouraged us all to join the relay for life in support of the American cancer society. This has been a great way to help cope with your loss. I always asked God why you, why cancer? Those question will forever be un answered! Although I couldn’t save you maybe we can help save others! I miss you so much! I cant wait until the summer. Now this is something we all look forward to, the summers when we have your boys!

Rosa, you and your family are in our prayers. You are like a sister to me and I continue to feel your family's pain and sorrow. I only met your brother once and from that one time, I could tell he was very special. I wanted to thank him for serving our country and being such a great brother and son. From the stories I've heard you tell, I know his limited time on Earth was special. I only wish that God would have given him more time on Earth. Always know that I will be here for you and your family. May God Bless You and Your Family. We love you! Love, The Martinez Family

Words alone cannot express the pain I feel in my heart. You were my brother before I married your sister. We shared a common bond that all Marines share. You welcomed me into your home and into your family. Thank you for everything that you did for me and thank you for all the OOH-RAH gifts. I have never meet a more dedicated and motivated Marine than yourself. You stood true to the core values of Honor, Courage, and Commitment. It was my pleasure and honor to know such an outstanding husband, father, son, and brother. Semper Fi brother. Rest in peace and keep the heavens safe till we meet again.

Tavin,
You will live forever in my heart. I know that you are the Lord's soldier now, his Marine and our protectant. I am thankful that I spent as much time with you as I could during these very difficult 2 years. I know how much you loved me, but I want you to know that I love you more than you ever imagined. You are my inspiration. Never have I admired someone as much as I do you. You truly are my hero. You never gave up fighting this battle, you were so courageous and so strong. And yet you still managed to be the ideal Marine. I will never forget the day you were promoted to Gunny. I was overwhelmed with pride and flooded with love as I watched you stand at attention outside your hospital room, just one day after having had a transplant. I knew you were hurting, and tired, yet it never showed. You stood on your own 2 feet, even mingling and talking with the many Marines that were present for a good while after the ceremony. Finally, when it was over I saw you painstakingly take off those massive boots and the uniform you so loved, that at that time, swarmed around you in excess material. You were strong, you showed honor, commitment, and courage like no other Marine... I knew in my heart how truly special you are. I miss you big brother. Always and forever,
Rosy
