Helen Wheat Obituary

HELEN SERAFY WHEAT died peacefully on August 26, 2002 after a lengthy struggle with end stage renal disease. She was born on February 9, 1932 in Brownsville, Texas to Greek immigrant parents, Theodore and Angela Serafy. She graduated from the University of Texas with a B.A. in Education, spending more than 40 years as an elementary and bilingual teacher, primarily in the Spring Branch Independent School District. She married Richard Allyn "Buck" Wheat in 1958, enjoying 30 years of marriage until he preceded her in death in 1988. She leaves her loving and devoted daughters and their families: Angela and Doug Cheves and grandchildren Allyn and Kristyn; Melanie and Robert Whatley and grandchildren Cameron, Morgan and soon to arrive Meagan. She is also survived by her two brothers, Nick and Victor Serafy. A memorial service will be held at St. Martin's Episcopal Church, 717 Sage Road on Tuesday, September 3rd at 2:00 p.m. with the Rev. Peter Thomas and Rev. Laurence Gipson officiating. A reception will follow in the Bagby Parish Hall. For those desiring, contributions may be directed to The Wayside Chapel Fund at St. Martin's Episcopal Church.

Helen and I grew up together in Brownsville. She was a very accomplished lady, and extremely proud of her lovely family. I know you miss her. I regret not seeing her obituary last week. I would have attended her services to honor her life. My sincere condolences to all of you.
