James Wheat Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by John M. Ireland & Son Funeral Home and Chapel on Mar. 5, 2026.
James Paul Wheat, a beloved son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, departed this life on March 3, 2026, at the age of 96. James was born on March 28, 1929, and spent his life as a dedicated family and religious man, tireless worker, and veteran, originally joining the United States Army before retiring from the United States Air Force. He was known for his commitment to his family and cherished every moment spent with them.

A resident of Moore, Oklahoma, James leaves behind his beloved wife, Betty Lou Wheat, who was his devoted wife of 74 years. They were married in September 1952 in Kenefic, Oklahoma, forming a bond that withstood the test of time. Together they raised a family that includes their 3 children, James R. Wheat (Traci J.), Cendy Hoffer (Jack D) and Ruben Wheat (Cindy Johnson). He took great pride in his grandchildren-Jolene Ryan, Reggie Wheat, Dareck Hoffer, Chessa Church, and Rebecca Sikes and was blessed with 12 great-grandchildren who brought him immense joy.

James is also survived by his sister, Margret Joines, and her husband Clifford, along with his brother Edward Wheat and his wife, Debbie. He was preceded in death by his father, William J. Wheat, and mother, Irene Wheat; a son, James R. Wheat and his wife Traci J.; and his siblings, Cornelia and Bob White and Charles Wheat.

Throughout his life, James found joy in the simple pleasures: watching western movies, gardening, and engaging in his favorite pastime of CB/Sideband, Oklahoma Central VHF Club and (KC5BTW) Ham Radio operator. His humor was infectious, often bringing laughter to those around him and reminding everyone to find joy in life. James enjoyed traveling and sought out adventures with his grandchildren, creating lasting memories that will be cherished forever.

Family and friends are invited to visit and celebrate James' life on Saturday, March 7, 2026, from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM. His family will be receiving friends from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM, welcoming all who wish to share their memories and condolences.

Graveside service will be held at Sunny Lane Cemetery on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, at 1:00 PM
