Joseph Porto Obituary

JOSEPH AMEDEO PORTO passed away on September 5, 2008 at the age of 86. Joe was born March 21, 1923 in New York, New York. The youngest of nine children born to Italian immigrants, he was raised in the Little Italy section of Manhattan, and later the Bronx. He attended Christopher Columbus High School and City College of New York. He joined the United States Army in 1942 and attained the rank of Captain while serving in Europe during World War II. After the war, Joe was stationed in Texas and decided to remain there after his honorable discharge from the Army. He chose Houston as his new home and attended law school at the University of Houston, where he met his bride of 57 years, Esther. After law school, Joe went to work for Texaco, Inc. as a tax attorney, and in 1961 established his own law offices, today known as Porto, Trueheart and McStay, L.L.C. Joe was a leading member of many civic and professional associations in West Houston, where he and Esther raised their family. As busy as he always was, Joe's family always came first. Some of his greatest joys were the annual trips to New York for family reunions and hunting trips out west with his sons. As a member of the Greatest Generation, he made lasting and significant contributions to his community, and will be dearly missed by a host of friends, colleagues, and family. Joe is survived by his wife of 57 years, Esther, daughter Cynthia Jo Walkup, sons Stephen and Joe, Jr., granddaughters Nicole Porto, Stephanie Porto, Rebecca Walkup, Laurie Porto, Analyn Porto, Evangeline Porto, and a host of relatives. The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Tuesday, September 16, 2008 at Woodlawn Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM, Wednesday, September 17, 2008 in the Chapel of Woodlawn Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Woodlawn Garden of Memories. In lieu of usual remembrances, donations may be made to the Parkinson Foundation of Harris County.

Dear Joe,

A true miracle of life is that even after death the spirit of those we love and lose remains in our memory and that of everyone they touched to help us fill the void in our heart until our faith helps us heal the hurt. We will keep all of you in our prayers.

Steve and Joe: All I can say is your dad was really funny when it was time to be funny and really business like when that time came too. I don't know Cynthia - but what a father you all had. I feel blessed to have met him, his beautiful bride and all his kids and grandchildren. It's been a while, but you have to admit he had a great sense of humor! My deepest sympathies for your loss.

Steve and Joe (and Cynthia and Mrs. Porto) - We are sorry to hear about the passing of another member of the Greatest Generation. On my several trips to the home near Jane Long Jr. High, I recall Mr. Porto as a smart guy who was direct in his conversations, and who had no time for fools or their behavior. He was a great role model. I know he taught the boys a lot about the law, auto mechanics (Model T Ford?), and how to properly handle a gun. And the beat goes on: I still recall the best preventive maintenance I ever received (35 years ago!) from young Joe: change the oil (and filter!) every 5,000 miles. And Joe has now passed on his lessons on gun safety to my sons out at his ranch near Fulshear, TX.

R.I.P. Mr. Porto - With much love and sympathy to his family - Shawn McShane and family (Portland, OR)

My sincere gratitude to each one of you for the kind words about my father, to my family, and myself. My father would have been embarassed with all the attention & fuss, but he would be most appreciative of all the love each one of you have shown.
We all miss him very much.
Again, Thank You all very much for your Good thoughts, wishes, and prayers! May God embrace you with his Grace and Love.
