Julius Allen Obituary

JULIUS "JULIE" ALLEN, PhD of Houston, Texas, passed away on Thursday, February 10, 2005, in the company of his loving family. He was a devoted husband and father, an internationally recognized cardiovascular research scientist, Director of the Graduate Program for Cardiovascular Sciences at Baylor College of Medicine, and a participant and leader in numerous progressive social and political causes on a local and national level. Causes dear to his heart included protecting individual and community freedoms, and advocating oral education for the deaf. In each of his endeavors, Julie succeeded in championing excellence and the finest traditions of his calling, while providing kindness and compassion to his students and colleagues. He was the prototypical mentor and will be greatly missed. He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Martha "Marty", two sons, Jeffrey and Matthew, daughter-in-law, Ronna Welsh, brother Edward, Uncle Chuck Savage, and numerous loving nieces, nephews and cousins. Graveside services will be held at Emanu El Memorial Park Cemetery, 8341 Bissonnet, on Sunday, February 13, 2005, at 2:00 PM. Cantor Robert Gerber will officiate. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to either the Anti-Defamation League of Houston, or the Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf in Washington, D.C.

Dr. Allen was a student's biggest supporter. I cannot tell you how shocked my husband and I were to learn of this tragedy. I am still in shock. I think every one of his present and past students can tell several examples of how he went to bat for us. For me, Dr. Allen was the very first person to think that maybe someday I could be a cardiovascular biologist. He accepted me into the CVS program and looked after me through my evolution. I remember the look of pride in his face when he learned of some accomplishment one of us had achieved. I remember his criticism, always delivered with our best interest in mind and never petty. I remember how you could always always always rely on him to be at your seminar, even when faculty participation was otherwise a bit on the low side. The CVS graduate program has such a strong foundation because of Dr. Allen, and all success I have had in my research career can be directly linked back to the training I received as a CVS graduate sudent. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family. We all lost a great man last week.

We all miss a great man. Dr. Julius Allen was a remarkable man who founded the cardiovascular sciences program, and showed us how sincere persistance on a noble idea can be useful. Julie is in our heart and we always remeber his lessons.

I am a current student in the Program in Cardiovascular Sciences of Baylor College of Medicine doing my thesis work in North Carolina. I am sorry that I cannot attend the graveside ceremony because of the distance. Dr. Allen always had good sense of humor and a warm heart for students. He will be missed and remembered in my heart forever.

Dr.Allen is always nice to students and colleagues. As a foreign student here, I really appreciate his kindness, encouragement and great personality. It is really a pity that I missed his funeral because I didn't receive the notice(something wrong with my email box). I believe all the students in Cardiovascular Science will miss you forever.

I am so sad to know Dr. Allen left us. He was my first Professor in Baylor when I joined the graduate school there ten years ago. I am so thankful to have had him as my mentor in graduate school -for more than 6 years there, he was a person who had impact on my life. From the discussion of research, to the learning of appreciating Jazz, to the help with selecting a name for my newborn daughter, he is a great teacher and a caring friend whom you can always learn from, share feeling with, and obtain understanding and unconditional support.

Dr. Allen was a most respectable person in my life, not only as a distinguished scientist, but also as a great mentor and friend of our graduate students here.I am so sorry for your loss.

Dr. Allen was an extraordinary program director for Cardiovascular Sciences at Baylor College of Medicine, mentor on my dissertation committee, and friend who has always been available for me. I consider myself fortunate to have been one of his students, and feel bad for the new students in our program who will not get this rare opportunity to have interacted with such a distinguished student advocate.

Julie Allen was an amazing human being filled with curiosity, compassion, humor and intelligence. He always had a thought on any subject and was interested in giving you a recommendation for a great restaurant. As a student in the Cardiovascular Sciences Program, I am unable to imagine being here without him. It is through him that I met my fiance, and we will always remember Julie in our hearts. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.

I am just very sad. Talking with Dr. Allen in the halls was always a highlight. We talked about all kinds of stuff. My thoughts are with his family and the entire Baylor family.

I am a current student of the Cardiovascular Sciences program, and I have always had the utmost respect for Dr. Allen. He gave me advice, support, and understanding when I have needed them most, and it was a wonderful feeling to know that he was always there. My wife has never met Dr. Allen, but she knew what a great person he was just from how I talked about him. He will truly be missed. He has touched many, many lives.

Julie, you will be greatly missed. You were always a friend, a colleague and a mentor to me. Your dedication and enthusiasm in science was an inspiration to all around you and your smile was always present. Words cannot express the impression you have made in many lives or how much you will be missed. Thank you Julie, and thank you Marty for sharing him with all of us who were touched by him. Dr. Allen had been an excellent director of our Nation-Renowned Cardiovascular Sciences Graduate Program. His diligence always inspired me. His warm personality made me a foreign student feel like at home. He was the one who hooded me at the graduation ceremony. I miss him very much, especially the everyday "Good Morning" he and I said to each other.

I worked with Julie a great deal. I'm in the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and Julie, being the Program Director of Cardiovascular Sciences and the Chairman of the Curriculum Committee gave us many opportunities to work together. His dynamic personaltiy and hands-on management style is going to be greatly missed. There's really no one quite like Julie. He was one of a kind. Even though our relationship was based on work -- I really did consider him a friend.
