Laura Pickett Obituary

Laura Pickett
05/18/1929 - 11/08/2022
Laura Civitello Pickett, of Houston, Texas, born May 18, 1929 in New Haven, CT, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 8, 2022 in New Braunfels, Texas. She was the daughter of Florence and John Civitello. After graduating from East Haven High School, she went to work and in June of 1953 she married C. Rodman Pickett. Together they started their family and lived in Columbia, Bolivia and Trindad then settled in Houston, Texas.
Raised in Momauguin very close to the shore, she could walk to the beach which accounted for her love of the water. You could always find her looking for sharks teeth every summer in Galveston. However, Laura's true love was tap dancing. She started to dance when she could walk and danced into her 70s. She taught, alongside her own teacher, the younger girls and was in numerous shows throughout the years. She danced for the USO in New Haven at the end of World War II and she could be spotted dancing at the 24-mile marker at the Houston Marathon. Laura also volunteered and retired from St. Vincent De Paul Society, worked for a clinic for underprivileged mothers in our community and was the President of the St. Cecilia Woman's Club. She was a voracious bridge player and was even involved with a few "secret" groups.
Laura is preceded in death by her parents, siblings and husband, C. Rodman Pickett and is survived by her nine children: Chuck and Kathi, Susan and David Outon, John, Tom, Jim, Bobby and Diane, Bill and Debbie, Mary, Tina and Jesse Martinez, and 12 grandchildren. Honorary pallbearers are Laura's six sons and two sons-in-law.
A memorial mass in celebration of Laura's life will be at 10:30 a.m., December 19, 2022, at St. Cecilia Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Vincent DePaul Society at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, 11720 Joan of Arc Dr., Houston, Texas 77024.

Laura answered phones at the St. Vincent de Paul Society for several years. I was always impressed with how kind and helpful Laura was to those calling in for assistance. She had a smile on her face and you could hear that in her voice. She was a joy to work with and I know she is missed.
