Tommie Vaughn Obituary

TOMMIE VAUGHN, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed from this world on Friday evening, the 8th of July 2005. Born on the 12th of March 1918 near Brownwood, Texas, Tommie grew up on a cattle and sheep ranch near Trickham, Texas, which was founded by his great-grandfather in 1874. He graduated from Brownwood High School in 1937 and attended Texas A & M University on an athletic scholarship. During his years at A & M, he was the team's center and defensive captain on the famous 1939 National Championship Football Team. He achieved the rank of Cadet Major in the Corp of Cadets as a Battalion Commander. In 1941, he received a BA degree in Marketing and Finance. One week after graduation, he entered the Army as an infantry officer and later transferred to the Army Air Corp where he became a pilot. Tommie was discharged in 1945 with the rank of Captain. In June of 1946, he opened his first Ford dealership in Granbury, Texas and in February of 1950, he moved the dealership to Glendale, California. In October of 1956, he opened Tommie Vaughn Ford in Houston where the dealership remains today. Tommie served as chairman of the Houston Automobile Dealers Association, a member of the Ford Dealer Council, and was honored by TIME Magazine as one of the nation's most distinguished automobile dealers. Tommie became a member of the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo (HLS&R) in 1957 and was elected to the Board of Directors in 1961. He served as Vice President of the show from 1969 through 1971 and then President and Chairman of the Board from 1972 to 1978. At the time of his passing, he was a lifetime member of the HLS&R Executive Committee. During his tenure as president at the HLS&R, Tommie was instrumental in forming the World Championship Barbeque Committee. Active in his local community, Tommie was elected to the Board of Directors and served as Chairman of the Heights Chamber of Commerce. He was also a member of the Shriners Jesters' Houston Court 136. Tommie was inducted into the Texas A & M Athletic Letterman's Hall of Fame, and he was also recognized as a Distinguished Alumni at the university. He was also awarded for his high school athleticism and was inducted into the Texas High School Football Hall of Fame and the Gordon Wood's Hall of Champions in Brownwood. Tommie was an extraordinary man who loved life and lived everyday to the fullest. His work ethic and generous spirit made him successful in all areas of his life. He genuinely loved people, especially his family and friends, and was grateful to all who helped him along the way. Tommie will be missed; but certainly not forgotten. Tommie was preceded in death by his parents, Mabel and Tom Vaughn, and his brother, Jack Vaughn. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Helen Jean Kiker; daughters, Kay Holloway and husband Bob, and Jeanie Janke and husband Jim; grandchildren, Alicia Wynn, Andrea Chapman and husband Bert of Atlanta, and Kyle ad Kirby Janke. The family desires to acknowledge and extend their sincere thanks to Tommie's dedicated care providers; Marsha Sparks, Tonya Mosley, Litchie Brown, Cornelia Fontenot, and Hope Anderson. Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from six until eight o'clock this evening, Monday, the 11th of July, in the Library of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons. A private graveside service, for the family to attend, will be conducted on Tuesday morning, the 12th of July, at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery. The memorial service will be conducted at eleven o'clock in the morning on Tuesday, the 12th of July, in The New Church of St. Martin's Episcopal Church, 717 Sage Road in Houston, with the Rev. John R. Bentley, Jr. and Rev. George Aurich as officiants. Immediately following the service, all are invited to a reception, in Tommie's honor, in the adjacent Bagby Parish Hall. In lieu of usual remembrances, the family suggests memorials in Tommie's name be directed to the 1939 National Championship Sustaining Fund, c/o Texas A & M Letterman's Association, P. O. Box 5346, College Station, TX, 77844-5346; or to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Scholarship Fund, P. O. Box 20070, Houston, TX, 77225-0070.

I'VE BEEN AN EMPLOYEE AT TOMMIE VAUGHN FOR SIX YEARS NOW, AND SOME OF MY MOST EARLIEST MEMORIES ARE WHEN I WAS AN OPERATOR AND MR. VAUGHN WOULD COME IN EVERDAY AND TALK ABOUT THE WEATHER WITH ME. HE WAS A WONDERFULL MAN AND WILL BE MISSED BY ALL.

Our deepest sympathy. We did not know Tommie Vaughn but have heard the name for so many years. Only after reading in the newspaper did we learn Mr. Vaughn was from Brownwood, Tx, where my husband grew up. We were just in Trickham last week, population is 12. It was interesting to look up Trickham on the internet and learn of its history. Good people come out of those small Texas towns. Tommie Vaughn was surely one of those good people.

I am truly sorry we did not know him. Sincerely, Ardyce and Mary Birmingham

Though I left Texas when I was young, I carry a few special memories of Uncle Tommie. One was at Lake Brownwood when I came to visit and again here in California. At that time he shared some special family stories. I will always charish that time with him. My prayers are with you Aunt Helen, Kay and Jennie.

Kay and Alicia,

I am very sorry to hear of the passing of Tommie Vaughn. Having just lost my own Father I grieve with over the loss of your Father and Grandfather. Fathers are tough to lose because they can represent strength and stability to a family.Nevertheless I believe that the Lord takes over that role in our lives after our Dads are gone. I know that you will miss him greatly. God's peace to you both and your families.

Kay & Family,

My thoughts & prayers go out to you and your family. I remember visiting your dad from time to time when Bubba Becker had his Jewlery store on Post Oak. Bubba would have me drop things off at the dealership or just drop off Tommie at the Astrodome during the Houston Rodeo. They would all meet up at Becker's Jewlery and they would talk for hours in Bubba's office (those were the days). He will be missed by all.

auto world.

Paul Auten

We are sorry to hear of Mr. Vaughn's passing--however, this world's loss is surely Heaven's gain. We hold Mr. Vaughn in great esteem--a great friend--a fellow Aggie, and the best Ford dealer we've ever known. There may not be a reference to Mr. Vaughn in the dictionary under "integrity"--but there should be--whatever Mr. Vaughn said, you could take to the bank! I'm sure my Dad, who died in 1991, and Mr. Vaughn are catching up on the past few years, and that their spirits will continue to guide and inspire us. Our sincerest condolences from Paul & Martha Auten, Wray Auten and all of your friends at A-B Gas Company.

I have read many things about Mr. Vaughn, but the one thing I read that I know is true. I quote, John Thomason "To my knowledge, he was the toughest man to take off his feet by any blocker," After working for him, I have seen that determination applied year after year. He has set examples for many people, especially me. God bless you Mr. Vaughn.

Helen, Kay, Jean, and Jim,

My thoughts and prayers are with you all. We go back a long time. How proud I am to have known Tommie. What a very, very special man.

He was a wonderful man with a huge heart and so much fun. He was always there when you needed him. He will be terribly missed by so many.

I have a feeling that he is in the company of old friends by the name of Hodges and Alsworth, to name a few. Bet they are having a grand time reminiscing about the good old days.

May God hold Him in His loving arms for all eternity. He was one of a kind and will always be in my heart. You are all in my heart. God bless and keep you strong. You were his life.

My love to you all,

Tommie Vaughn

Though the miles and years kept us from a close relationship, those infrequent embraces with Uncle Tommie were and are, precious to me. My deepest sorrow is shared with Aunt Helen, Kay, and Jennie as well as their families. If there is anything I can do at this time please let me know. Uncle Tommie was a fine man and I carry his name with pride. God Bless.
