Vernon Smith Obituary

Guy Vernon Smith born November 9, 1941, to Guy Arthur & Willie Oris Smith of Mt. Pleasant, Texas passed away on April 16, 2024. He is survived by his wife Karen S. Smith, children: Lisa & (John) Walls, Sheila & (Patrick) Gibson, Stacey & (Benton) Bond, Vic & (Lilly) Webb; grandchildren: Maddi & (Noah) Scanlon, Hannah & (Ben) Clausen, Jake Walls, Megan & (Trey) Aseltine, Shelby Gibson, Gabby Gibson, Braxton Bond, Brynn Bond, Joshua Silva and Emma Webb; great grandchildren: Ivy Clausen and August Aseltine.
Vernon attended Mt. Pleasant high school where he was valedictorian and served as president of his class. Upon graduation he went on to attend East Texas Baptist College where he played basketball and baseball. He later obtained a M.Ed. from Sam Houston State University. A lifelong educator, Vernon began his career coaching at Southmore Intermediate and then, in 1972, he became the head basketball coach at Klein High School where he also taught math. A few years later, he served as an assistant principal at both the original Klein Intermediate and at Wunderlich Intermediate before his promotion to principal at Hildebrandt Intermediate and later he became principal at Klein Forest High School. He retired in 1999 after fifteen years as director of school administration for Klein I.S.D.
In retirement, he enjoyed spending his time in Cuchara, Colorado where he volunteered at the Cuchara Chapel, was an avid golfer, and volunteered with CanCare (having survived non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma). He loved his many visits from his children, grandchildren, and friends from Texas.
Vernon was deeply rooted in his Christian faith. Known as a kind and gentle man he was loved by many and will be sorely missed.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 20th at 2 pm at the Fairfield Baptist Church located at 27240 US-290, Cypress, TX 77433.

Vernon and I were on the freshman basketball team at ETBC in 1960-61. I transferred to another University and lost track of Vernon. I remember him as a great teammate and hard working leader on the court.

Vernon Smith was a good, kindly person! He practiced true Christianity in many ways. He stands as an example to many.
