Eugene Hein Obituary

Eugene (Charley) Hein

Schaumburg, IL - Eugene (Charley) Hein passed away peacefully on December 17, 2020 at the age of 94. Veryl, his wife of 65 years, was with him in their residence in Schaumburg, Illinois.

He was the penultimate child of nine siblings born to Gustave and Minnie Hein in Cambria, Wisconsin, all of whom have preceded him. He is survived by his wife, Veryl, three sons, Buck (Linda), Tim (Sarah), and Jerry (Linda), as well as five grandchildren, Tyler, Devin, Ben, Rachael, and Anna.

Growing up, he was an athlete and sportsman, interests that stayed with him for his entire life and career. He was a pitching prospect for the Pittsburgh Pirates, but Uncle Sam called dibs.

He enlisted in the Army and served in the 508th Regiment of the 82nd Airborne Division for 3 years.

Charley attended UW-Platteville and obtained his Bachelor's degree in Industrial Education.

He began teaching at Valders High School with the class of 1954 and also was the freshman basketball and baseball coach. He became the varsity baseball coach in 1956 and held that position for 25 seasons. He completed his Masters degree at Colorado State University in 1966. Along the way, he also coached swimming, acted as the Athletic Director, and taught driver's ed, retiring in 1988. He was inducted into the Lakeshore All Sports Hall of Fame in 2002.

Charley was always active in the community, beginning with joining the fire department in 1955. He was the first summer youth recreation director. He later started the T-ball program in Valders and started a youth team to compete with the Manitowoc County Officers program.

He served on the Village Board from 1988 to 2004. He was an active member of Faith Lutheran Church and a member of the Lion's Club since 1955, serving as President and Secretary. He continued to enjoy hunting and fishing with friends, cheering on the Packers, and listening to the Brewers broadcasts.

Condolences to Veryl. We graduated from Valders High in 1956. Jerome (Boomer) had Charley for baseball coach and shop teacher. We both had him for Drivers Ed and will always remember him with happy times.

Condolences to Veryl & the Hein boys. The Lutze family moved into the house across the street from your home in 1961. During our childhood, we played together and I got to know Charley & Veryl. Wonderful people. As an adult, we owned homes in Charley's back yard and then right next door to them. Even though I didn't go to Valders High, your dad was my Driver's Ed. instructor. I still remember the first time he took me out on 151 and driving to Manitowoc. I served with him on the Valders Fire Dept. and later on the Village Board. Great neighbor, great man. R.I.P. Charley.

Great man, great teacher, great sense of humor, great heart, great human being. What more can you ask for in a man? RIP Mr. Hein.

As my drivers education teacher he would say “briskly through the intersection”. When I taught my daughter to drive I would tell her the same thing. She now tells her sons the same thing. His words will live on forever. Good memories of a truly nice man!
