Jay Rosenthal Obituary

Boise - Jay Forshaw Rosenthal (August 31, 1936 - December 25, 2025) passed away peacefully at home in Boise, Idaho on Christmas morning. Jay was born and raised in St. Louis, MO. He attended Washington University in St. Louis, served briefly in the United States Army, and then earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Missouri in Columbia, MO. While at Washington University he met and married his beloved wife of 67 years, Joyce Tolbert, beginning years of family adventures. They moved to Santa Fe, NM in 1964 with their two young daughters, Elizabeth and Susan, where Jay passed the New Mexico bar exam and started his long legal career. Jay and Joyce welcomed their son, Jeff, while in New Mexico. Over the years Jay practiced law in both the private and public sectors in several states including New Mexico, Maryland, Missouri, Texas, Arizona, New York, and Idaho. Jay moved to Idaho in 1981 lured by the mountains and rivers for fishing and hunting. He loved traveling around the world with family and friends, finding joy in sharing stories of all the adventures he experienced together with Joyce, their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Jay was generous to friends, loved the outdoors, and always had a dog or two by his side. He believed in fairness and the rule of law. He especially enjoyed practicing trial law and worked for many years with the Ada County Prosecutor's office and later for Boise County.

He is survived by his wife Joyce, daughters Elizabeth Rosenthal (Jack Meador) and Susan Moore (Larry), his son Jeff Rosenthal (Melissa Parks), four granddaughters, and two great granddaughters.

Jay truly cared for people. I remember him driving up to talk about his longtime connections with the Boise County community, and almost vetting my care for the community he held dear. The check ins and conversations that he had with me really showed his depth. Jay will be remembered by the lives he touched.

What a loss to so many. Condolences to Joyce and family. Jay loved his kids and was so very proud of his grandchildren. Jay was a friend and mentor. An excellent attorney. His stories were epic. His humor and wit always at the ready. Connected to so many people in law and politics. He will be missed

Jay is one of my most treasured friendships; my heart is so sad but I know he continues to be the colorful raconteur he has always been in his "new" home. Until we meet again, friend.

Jay was a good attorney and a great friend. He was a natural story teller and could light up a room with laughter. He was a mentor to many people. Rest in peace, friend.

I had several cases over the years with Jay and considered him to be the consummate gentleman and professional. I spent eight years as a prosecuting attorney and thirty-nine years in criminal defense. During the course of my career the fair minded, objective brand of prosecutor Jay exemplified became a rare species. Jay knew what a solid case looked like and, to my knowledge, never put a case to a jury unless he had considered every aspect of applicable law and facts involved. He wasn't afraid to take on a tough case, but he never let himself be pressured into taking a bad case to trial for reasons having nothing to do with the rule of law or principles of justice. May you rest in peace my friend.

Lived across from each other for many years. When it came to the end of a particularly long day, we would share a dram of fine Irish along with spirited discussions. Precious memories never forgotten. Thank you fellow traveler.

I was lucky to be able to work with Jay at the Ada County Prosecutor´s Office. He was a man of great integrity and conviction. He never shied away from difficult cases and tried them all with professionalism. We had many fishing trips to Alaska together where he consistently provided the evening´s entertainment. A good man and I miss him.
