James L. Thompson

1962 - 2025

James Lawrence Thompson, 63, of McCammon, Idaho, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on November 13, 2025. He was born May 12, 1962, in Salt Lake City, Utah, the third of seven children to John and Carolyn (Engle) Thompson.

James grew up in Downey, Idaho-milking cows, shooting varmints, and getting into harmless mischief. A gifted athlete, he attended Marsh Valley High School where he played football, ran track, and sang in the MarVals. His senior year he attended Highland High School, earning All-State honors as a running back. A lifelong Eagles fan, he spent years cheering on his girls from the bleachers.

In 1983, James married his eternal companion, Tamera Dunn, and together they built a joyful life in McCammon, raising four daughters over 42 years of love, humor, forgiveness, and adventure. Hardworking and mechanically talented, he earned a welding degree from ISU, spent 25 years at Ash Grove Cement Plant, worked building windmills, and later retired from the INL.

Most at home outdoors, James loved hunting, fishing, and the cowboy way. He was a successful hunter who loved sharing stories of his adventures and singing around the campfire. Deepened by trials, James had a firm testimony of Jesus Christ and lived a life of faith, and service. Forever the toughest man in the world, his example remains his greatest lesson.

He is preceded in death by his parents, in-laws, and a brother-in-law. He is survived by his wife, four daughters, six siblings, and 12 beloved grandchildren.

A viewing will be held on Thursday, November 20, 2025, from 6-8 p.m. at the McCammon Stake Center, and again on Friday, November 21, from 10-11 a.m. Funeral services will follow on Friday at 11 a.m. at the McCammon Stake Center, with interment immediately after at Norton Cemetery.
