David Hoene Obituary

David D. Hoene
1924 - 2016
David D. Hoene, 92, took his last breath on Tuesday, June 21, 2016 surrounded by many of his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. David was born May 23, 1924, the third youngest child in a family of twelve from parents Arthur and Vera Hoene; he is the last sibling to pass away. He was born and lived his early life in Duluth, Minnesota, with summers spent fishing, hunting, exploring and living a rich life on Sissebakwet Lake in central Minnesota. David was active in sports, especially tennis at which he excelled, competing at a semi-pro level into his 50's.
David spotted Joan Patricia Lacey, a nursing student, when he walked into a mixer at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1947. It was love at first sight and they were married in December 1948 in Wheaton, Illinois. They celebrated 56 years of marriage before Joan passed away in 2004. Together David and Joan raised 15 children, 14 of whom survive them: Mary Joan Seiter (Steve), Kathleen M. Lacey, A'Channa K. Valle, David M. Hoene (Madeleine), Frances A. Thompson (Bill), Jean E. Hoene, Anne T. Johnson (Paul), Elizabeth K. Hoene, Robert P. Hoene (Carlene), Christopher J. Hoene (Melodee Joy), Sarah E. Brown (Mark), Margaret M. Harris (Tracy), Jane F. Hoene (deceased), Jonathan G. Hoene, Monica L. Hoene (Kim Langdon). There are also 31 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Together with a battalion of cousins, we all mourn the passing of our bright, articulate, loving, caring fisherman father/(great)grandfather/uncle.
David served in the Navy in World War II as a Commander of a Landing Craft Transport. After obtaining a Master's Degree in English Literature from Marquette University, teaching and working toward his Ph.D. at Notre Dame University, David returned to active military service during the Korean War while stationed at Great Lakes, Illinois. In 1956, he joined Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company, following his father and brothers into the business. This was his company and his career until he fully retired at the young age of 89. David and Joan started their lives together in Milwaukee and lived in Minnesota, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Colorado, Montana, and Milwaukee again before settling in Boise, Idaho where he was appointed General Agent of the Idaho/Eastern Oregon region. They dived fully into life in the Treasure Valley, becoming founding members of the Boise Swim and Racquet Club, original members of St. Mark's Parish, joining a Great Books Club which met for the next 40 years, having their 15th child and supporting Catholic education in Boise.
David had a deep love of learning, pursuing knowledge all of his life. He remained an active outdoorsman, hunting and fishing, or just enjoying being out of doors, especially in Cascade, Idaho and Malabar, Florida where he and Joan maintained homes and he reveled in the variety of birds he encountered. In Cascade David raised trees, patiently digging up seedlings growing in the shade and replanting them in sunlight, then carefully nurturing them. In Florida, he raised bromeliads, putting anyone who came to visit to work splitting, repotting and planting. David's love of life and fighting spirit kept him with us through various medical events and he died as he lived, fighting for life and emanating love for his family to the end. He will be remembered for his deep love of family and nature, humor (everyone will remember his puns!), compassion, dignity, sharp mind, nurturing spirit and outdoorsman skills. His children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews feel lucky to have had him in their lives. He will be sorely missed.
A Vigil and Rosary will be held on Sunday, June 26 at 7 pm at St. Mark's Church, 7960 Northview Street, Boise, ID 83704. A Funeral Mass will be held Monday, June 27 at 11:00 am at St. Mark's Church with a reception in the St. Mark's community center following the service.

Hello, Hoene family!

I'm the youngest of the Lange clan in Milwaukee. I got to know David later in his life, especially after dear Joan passed on. I hadn't spoken with him in years, but I came across some photos of him and your family and wondered again how he was doing. I'm sad to learn of his passing, but you were all so blessed to have such an amazing head of your family! Peace to all of you!

Dear Hoene Family,
George and I send our sympathies and prayers upon the death of your loved one, Dave.
A few memories...
George, Julie, John (age 2 1/2), Mike (age 1 1/2) drove a rented camper to Boise. Had Hoene stew (elk) for dinner. Was quite a while before Joanie and Dave realized we were there!! The blessings of a very large family!
Joan visited us at our first home in Milwaukee...hopped our garden fence...grabbed a carrot and ate it!
Joan was at the Archibald farm in New Lenox. Upon examining Alice Archibald, told us she had a staph infection and needed to go straight to the hospital.
Frances visited us in Milwaukee several times while she was at Marquette. Also remember Kathy visited us too.

We pray that Dave is at peace with Our Lord and that your family is at peace.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Hoene family, what a mighty crew! What a tremendous man has left this earth to his eternal home, to join the love of his life, Joan, and my dear mother, Clarabel, and our Lord and Savior, Jesus. Even though we did not get to spend much time with the Hoenes, each time was memorable. Uncle Dave will always be remembered by his love for life and learning, the light in his eyes and his good nature. He was always warm hearted, friendly, and full of stories and information. How thankful I am to have known him! He will be missed.
Love to all!

Great obit! I learned much I didn't know about Uncle Dave.

Every time I think of Uncle Dave, I feel a wonderful peace and warm hug. I always felt so welcome and appreciated in his presence. He always had a positive or funny comment on his lips. Even when I was a bit nervous, Uncle Dave always made me feel at home and part of his big family!
Rejoicing he is in Jesus' arms now!!!
Love you Uncle Dave!!!--Theresa (7th of Tom R. Lacey's)
