David Russell Obituary

David Gregory Russell On Dec. 11, 2008, David took the ultimate ride of his life to dwell in the awesome love of Jesus Christ, his Savior. Dave was born prematurely on May 6, 1938 to Virginia Gregory Russell and Don R. Russell in Boise, Idaho. He received all his schooling in Boise, graduating from Boise High School and attending a couple of years at Boise College. He and a friend moved to Calif. where he met and married Marlene Lumsden in 1959. He worked at Lockheed in Sunnyvale and Sylvania in Santa Cruz, Calif. When their first daughter was born, they decided to return to Idaho to raise their family, and their second daughter was born in Boise. Dave was hired by Idaho Power as an Electrical Apprentice. He retired 30 years later as an Engineering Supervisor. Dave had a very keen mind. He would absorb all the information he could find on a subject, and retain it for life. He enjoyed using his knowledge helping others. He had many hobbies throughout his life such as racing motorcycles at Owyhee Motorcycle Club, perfecting guns with his good friend Paul, and then target shooting and back to the lathe to make more adjustments on them. He loved music, all animals, nature and the outdoors. Dave spent many summers camping with his family. After retiring, he and his wife took a fabulous two month trip to The Yukon and Alaska. Upon returning, he decided to buy a '56 Austin Healy. Of course, each and every part had to be removed, checked, and replaced if necessary. He joined the Idaho British Car Club. He thoroughly enjoyed the company of his fellow club members and taking many trips and jaunts with them. He also used his knowledge to help others solve their car problems on a Healy website, and developed friendships across the USA and in foreign countries as well. He was asked to, and wrote articles for the Austin Healy magazine. Dave was a very unique and caring person, and will be greatly missed by the many people whose lives he touched. He left behind his wife, Marlene, daughter Camille and her husband Derrick Personette and grandchildren Ryan and Lindsey of Boise, daughter Lisa and her husband Brian Wilson, and grandchildren Janae and Jacob of Emmett, his aunt Eva Gale, cousin Cheryl and Gene Bolin and their family of Creswell Ore., a brother-in-law Bill and his wife Darlene Lumsden and their family, of Vancouver Wash., and many special friends. The family desires that any donations in his honor be made to Humphreys Diabetes Center at 1226 River St. Boise, ID 83702, any Animal Aid Organization, or the Boise Rescue Mission. Graveside services will be Friday, Dec. 19, 2008 at 3 p.m. at Morris Hill Cemetery, in the southeast section. Arrangements are by Summers Funeral Homes, Boise Chapel.

I was saddened to hear of Dave's passing. I just found out about his death yesterday 1/26/09. Had I known it would have been my privledge to have attended his service. I was thinking of Dave several days ago and was hoping that we would cross paths at one of the Idaho Power parties or picnics in the near future but saddely this will now not happen. Dave was responsible for my getting hired by IPCo in 1982 and I had the privelege of knowing and working with Dave for 10 years. One of the brightest human beings that I have known. He was always ready to share his knowledge and experiences with me and I will always be thankful for that. My condolences go out to his family. I am so sorry for your loss.

I own and operate a forum for the discussion of British cars. With nearly 10,000 members, it isn't often someone stands out in the crowd, but Dave certainly did. So much so that we have decided to create an annual "Dave Russell" award to be given to the forum member who best displays the unselfish sharing of knowledge that Dave exemplified. Through his participation on our forum, Dave touched the lives of many people all over the world. He will be missed, but not forgotten.

I knew Dave through the British car club, but I will remember him not by the car he restored, but by the examples he lived. He was quiet, but not timid. He always had a smile and a kind word. He was friendly, knowlegeable, and reliable but rarely the center of attention. He left this world a better place.

I always enjoyed visiting with Dave at coffee and on our outings. He always made me smile with his wonderful dry humor. I believe it isn't the trip you take but the friends that you meet on the way that make life special. Dave was a good friend and I will miss him.

I met Dave only a few times at car meets, but we corresponded via email many times and I've never met anyone so knowledgeable and anxious to help others with his knowledge. Soft-spoken and kind, he was a real gentleman who touched many, many people in the car hobby, including me. We'll miss him. Condolences to his family.

Dave was a great help and a great friend to the car people on the Austin Healey Forum. And He was that to me as well. I'm sure my contact with Dave from so far away, can't compare to the loss of the people so close to him, but I'm sure that he will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by many. My sincere congolances.

May his chariot be a red Austin Healy. Such a kind and brilliant man deserves a stylish ride.
