John Rovick Obituary

John Desmond Rovick, Jr 1919 - 2012 John Desmond Rovick, Jr. was born in Dayton, Ohio on October 2, 1919 to Ida Blue and John D. Rovick, Sr. He attended Longfellow Grade School until 1929 when he moved with his parents and sister Lucille to Detroit, Michigan. John continued schooling at Jackson Intermediate School and South Eastern High, entering Michigan State College in 1937. He graduated in 1941 with a B.A. degree majoring in speech/dramatics and radio broadcasting. In the summer of 1941 he started work as a staff announcer at WSPD in Toledo, Ohio. He was on air on Sunday December 7, 1941 when news came over the Teletype of the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He alerted the news department and station personnel and kept Ohio listeners informed of developments until news editors arrived. In February of 1942, John enlisted in the U.S. Army and was assigned to basic training in the radio operator school at Scott Field, Illinois, graduating as a Staff Sgt. He then went to air-gunnery school in Tyndall Field, Florida, where he was assigned to the 340th Bomb Group/489th Squadron in Columbia, South Carolina. He trained there in a B-25 Mitchell medium bomber and was promoted to Tech Sgt. He was then ordered to overseas duty in the Middle Eastern Theatre. In February of 1943, John, as radio operator and gunner in the plane "Stardust," flew with the rest of the five man crew to Africa where the met their ground echelon at the Suez canal. Combat missions were flown in Tunisia, Sicily, Italy and in areas throughout the Mediterranean Theatre. Having completed 50 bombing missions, he was awarded the Air Medal with eight-oak-leaf clusters, Victory Medal, Mid-East Medal, and a Presidential Unit citation. After the 41st mission the plane crash-landed in the sea. The crew was recommended for the Distinguish Flying Cross. Upon return to the U.S.A. John entered officer candidate training in Miami, Florida where he was commissioned 2nd Lt. Air Force. He completed his time in the service as a Special Service Officer assigned to Godman Field, Kentucky. While there, he met his future wife Jackie Macarthur. John returned to radio in Toledo and in 1947 John and Jackie were married. In 1948 they moved to California where he was hired in 1949 as a staff announcer at KTTV Channel 11. Subsequently, and for 18 years (1952 - 1970) he hosted a children's program as "Sheriff John." Among many other awards, he was honored in 1953 with an "Emmy" award for best children's program. John always loved music and some of his songs are still being sung today; e.g., "Birthday Polka" (put another candle on your birthday cake) and "Laugh and Be Happy". John also worked at KTTV as a staff announcer from 1949 - 1981 when he retired and moved to Boise, Idaho. In September of 1998, John was honored in Los Angeles at the 50th anniversary of the Emmy Awards. John took great joy and comfort in his faith and for many years attended Fellowship Baptist Church and Boise Friends Church where he was a regular lay reader of scripture and a vocalist. John was preceded in death by his parents and sister Lucille. Survivors include wife Jacqueline, of Glendale, California, daughters, Sandra Kaiser, Maricopa, Arizona, and Wendy Maceri, Northridge, California; grandchildren Robby, Kimberly, Gina, Michael, and Maggie; one great-grandchild Allison Peterson;and niece Luanne Koessel and nephews Bill and Gary Shryer. I represented the kids from the San Fernando Valley at Sherrif John's service. He was such an important and special part of our childhoods. I still sing The Birthday Song even tho I am 62 now. I and the other Valley kids were Blessed to have him as part of our learning about the world and manners, among many other things. Thank you Sheriff John for being a light for us all.

Wow, thank you, I never would have known about him being a Hero to our Country, and not just to me. What a great story about a great man.
I'll never forget when my Grandmother sent in my name for the birthday part of his show. I was the winner, right after the real winner was called and picked. I really was not the real winner, but to hear my name on TV I thought that I was a winner.
I loved that show, and him. May he rest in peace. I really never thought about him as being still alive, I mean for so much longer. When I came home from the Army, I really never thought about my old life as a kid. I guess I grew up while being deployed. And nothing ever seemed innocent again.
Thank you for this great story of one of my Childhood heroes.

I was the last reporter to speak with Mr. Rovick and was to have interviewed him four days before his eventual death. As we chatted he uplifted me--even in his declining state. What a joy it was to speak with a man who meant so much to me during the 1950s. The world is a dimmer place without John Rovick. Bless your soul--

Thank you Sheriff John, for sharing your life with all of us Southland baby boomers. I know that God used you to help fill a void that many of us had from broken and/or distracted families. You were good and true, and right and honorable - and consistent, for many years. Thank you, Rovick family, for sharing your husband and dad with us all.

Bless you Sheriff John! As a faithful member of the "Lunch Brigade" I have great memories of my mom fixing lunch and watching your great program. You are another great part of my history growing up in Vista, CA in the 50's.

One of my fondest "growing up" memories was watching Sheriff John and being part of the "lunch brigade". I was one of many who he wished "Happy Birthday" to on my special day. I had moved to Vista (from Montrose) and was amazed that he "knew" where I was to send me that wish. Crusader Rabbit was a favorite cartoon, also. No high-tech...just good old-fashioned values. A wonderful man and a wonderful legacy.

When I turned five-years-old in Azusa, CA, I was so delighted when Sheriff John had his artist (I cannot remember her name) draw a dancing elephant for my birthday "present." I was the luckiest kid on Cedar Glen Dr. Thank you, Sheriff John, for a wonderful lifetime of memories.

If it wasn't for Sheriff John, I wouldn't have the had the influence of a father figure in my life. Thank you, Mr. Rovick, for being a "Dad" to those of us who needed you. RIP, Sheriff John.

Sheriff John was my childhood hero, always upbeat and confirming of the importance of me. What a war hero as well. I greatly enjoyed knowing him in Boise as one of his care givers and found him to continue to have that optimistic outlook that was infectious. We miss him and will remember fondly . My best to the family. Steve Writer

I grew up in the Valley, and I also still have my Happy Birthday card, PLUS the envelope it came in from 1954. See attached. Sheriff John was so special to all of us Baby Boomers. Such wonderful, special childhood memories. Thank you Sheriff John for taking care of us and helping to shape us into the adults we are today. RIP. We will always love you.

I still have my signed photo from Sheriff John from the mid-1960s. I loved his show and have so many fond memories. If I had known he had moved to Boise, I would have hunted him down. We moved to Emmett in 1971. John had a huge impact on so many of us. I'm sorry for your loss.

My sister and I grew up in the San Fernando Valley and watched the Lunch Brigade almost every day, including Crusader Rabitt. Just this past February I and another workmate sang his birthday song for a fellow employees birthday. Sheriff John was a genteel man who filled our life with good qualities.

Memories of Sheriff John will live on. My son, who will be 60 Oct 28, watched that program every day. About 22 years ago, with children of his own, he began singing the Birthday Cake Polka at family bd parties. It is now a tradition at each birthday party, adult or child. Then grandchildren when younger were a bit resistant, but now everyone claps and some even join in now with the singing. Thank you Sheriff John. Your memory lives on! You have left a great legacy in this world. There are even some who never watched you, but know your song. Thanks. Anne Parker
