Matthew Eames Obituary

Matthew C. Eames
1960 - 2016
Matthew C. Eames, 56, a native Idahoan and former senior advisor at the U.S. Department of the Interior who was instrumental in the successful enactment of a number of Federal water laws, died Dec. 23 at Manor Care Health Services Fair Oakes in Fairfax, Virginia, where he had been a resident of the memory care unit since 2012. The cause was complications from frontotemporal dementia (FTD).
Mr. Eames joined the Interior Department in 2002 as chief of congressional and legislative affairs for the Bureau of Reclamation. Two years later, he was named director of congressional and legislative affairs for the department.
Mr. Eames graduated from Boise State University in 1983 with a B.A. in Political Science. The next year, he joined the Boise-based food and agribusiness company J.R. Simplot as a legislative analyst. In 1985, he headed to Washington, D.C. to work for then-U.S. Representative Larry Craig, a Republican from Idaho's first district.
Mr. Eames returned to Idaho in 1987, serving as vice president of the Idaho Association of Commerce and Industry until 1991, when he accepted a job with the Idaho Power Company as a senior legislative affairs representative.
On Christmas Eve 2010, Mr. Eames, then 49, was diagnosed with FTD, a rare form of dementia that disproportionately strikes both men and women younger than 65 and affects personality, speech and muscle function.
An accomplished athlete with a passion for basketball, Mr. Eames continued to play on a men's recreational league with St. James Catholic Church in Falls Church, VA after his diagnosis until he moved to Manor Care.
Photographs of family and friends covered the walls of Mr. Eames's room at Manor Care, along with posters of his favorite Beatles albums.
"Matt's greatest strength was his zest for life, coupled with a strong sense of purpose," says his brother, John. "It brought him marriage, family, friends, and a successful career."
Mr. Eames is survived by his wife of 27 years, Cathleen [Turski] Eames and their beloved daughters Melina, Hayley and Emily; his mother, Norma of Rigby, ID; sisters, Cheryl and Mary Lee; brothers Mark (Cherrie) and John (Eileen); and five nieces and nephews.
His wife says Mr. Eames would most want to be remembered for "his love of his country, his family, his friends and that, in some way, he made a difference in this world while he was in it."

Matt was an extraordinary person with a tremendous work ethic. He had a special way of challenging people to do their very best. He always carried himself with such dignity and pride. He was a gentleman and had a wonderful smile. I knew Matt for many years. We grew up in the same community. I also had the good fortune of working with him at Idaho Power Company. My very deepest sympathy to all of you in the loss of such a good husband, father, son, brother and friend. My thoughts and prayers will be with you for the days and weeks ahead.

Although Matt was not a close friend, I admired his commitment to the people of Idaho, both as a Congressional staffer and throughout his later career. If I were asked to picture a typical Idahoan, I could describe Matt: open, straightforward, honest, direct. I knew him mainly through his economic development work, and the regional advocacy group, PNWA-- a group he once led as its President. A few mutual friends who knew him well have been his proud supporters throughout his professional life, and as he more recently suffered health setbacks. I send my regrets to his family for his death after a life well lived, and know his death will create a void to all who knew him well.

Matt was a wonderful guy with a great smile and a kind heart. The world is a little poorer now that Matt has left us, but heaven is certainly a better place now that he is there.

Oh I am heartbroken. Matt was always so kind and sweet. He was one of the most handsome talented people I knew and so humble. The world lost a great man. My heart goes out to all of his wonderful family. My prayers are with you

We were saddened to hear of Matts trials and then his passing. He was such a great guy. Val coached Matt in Rigby in about 1974 in the baseball Babe Ruth league for 13-14-15 year olds. We occasionally would cross paths in Boise, in the Statehouse, at a Hawks game etc and he always remembered us and would always address Val as "Coach". What a wonderful, successful life he made for himself albeit it was cut way too short. We are so grateful that we were able to know Matt, and would have liked to have known him better. We are both Rigby natives and Norma was a great friend of my mom, Glenda Allgood. You are all in our thoughts and prayers.
