Michael Benton Obituary

Michael Edgar Benton 1952 - 2011 Michael Edgar Benton, devoted Bronco Fan, passed away at home, surrounded by family on Saturday, August 27, 2011. The cause of death was cancer. Mike was born on October 8, 1952, in Whittier, California, bringing much joy to his parents, Edgar and Lois Benton. Although he had developmental disabilities, Mike led a full and active life. Proudly independent, he was an avid fan of music, movies, voting, and the Democratic Party. Without question, his biggest passion in life was for the Boise State Broncos. Mike was a season ticket holder for football since the stadium opened in September 1970, and for basketball since the 1980's. He NEVER missed a home game, even forgoing his sister's wedding in order to cheer on his beloved Broncos. Mike had a strong work ethic and held a number of jobs through The Arc. A career highlight was his employment by the Broncos as a locker room assistant in 1990. Mike was a kind and gentle soul who will be missed by many, but most especially his family; mother Lois, brother Tim, sisters Mary, Linda Brilz, and Julie, brother-in-law Rick Brilz, nephew and niece Sam and Catie Brilz, all of Boise, sister Lori of New York City, Uncle Harley, Aunt Mary and cousins Phil and Leona Fouts of Caldwell, family members in Nebraska, and his canine companion, Olive. He is preceded in death by his father Edgar, and his cousin Steven Fouts. A memorial service will be held at 11:00am on Wednesday at First Congregational Church, 2211 Woodlawn Avenue. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to The Arc, Inc, P.O. Box 1016, Boise, ID 83701, or your favorite charity. Go Broncos!

I just heard of mike's passing. I am so sorry to have missed the celebration of his life. Mike and I talked very often about politics and his devotion to the Democratic Party, who he voted for and the $5 he gave. Mike will be especially missed this football season, he visited our tailgate every game and we shared his life and passion for the Broncos. Mike, we miss you and will toast you the opening day this year against Tulsa. Goodbye, Mike you were a wonderful man.

The heart aches for what it has loved and lost...My deepest sympathy to all of you upon the death of Mike. He and Edgar must be chatting away about the Broncos and their upcoming season! May you find peace in reminiscing about Mike, his funny stories and charm that warmed the hearts of many. We always had a laugh or two at Dr. Slattery's office!!
