Roberta Delaney Obituary

Roberta Delaney
Roberta Delaney passed away from ALS on Friday January 10, 2014. Roberta loved traveling, music, reading, camping, good conversation, good food and wine, hiking, and being with friends and family. Roberta was a tenured professor at Glendale Community College in Phoenix, Arizonawhere she taught reading. Roberta was a skilled, thoughtful and caring teacher who worked hard to help her students understand and love reading as she did. Roberta loved to hike the many canyons, desert trails and mountains of Arizona accompanied by friends, family and one of two of her dogs. She was instrumental in helping to create the Phoenix Mountain Preserves. She was passionate about giving voice to the powerless and unheard and gave generously of her time and resources for humane and just treatment for animals. In addition she worked tirelessly and generously for the environment, for civil liberties, and never hesitated to step up and do what she felt was right and necessary to make the world better. More than anything she was generous, kind and caring, always putting other's needs ahead of her own. She is survived by her husband Dave Delaney and her daughters Suzanne Buchanan, Sandra Harrington and Claudia Delaney, son-in laws, Steve Buchanan, Alan Harrington and Pete Rittinger and five grandchildren, Billy Buchanan, Danielle Buchanan, Christopher Buchanan, Alexis Harrington and Colin Harrington. A memorial service will be held at the family home in Phoenix, Arizona on February 8, 2014 starting at 2:00 pm.

Roberta was a respected colleague in the English, Reading and Journalism dept at Glendale Community College. Along with many others, I was privileged to know and learn from her. RIP

Roberta was a rare individual! How she loved life with her whole being. She threw herself headlong into whatever adventure presented, be it travel, a picnic, a dinner party, a game, a cause – the list goes on. She most loved her family. I always looked forward to her Christmas letter telling the adventures they had shared during the past year. We have been blessed to have known Roberta and she will be missed.

Roberta was the dearest friend one could ever have as she brought out the best in everyone - always ready to laugh, help out, to listen, to compete fiercely (but nicely) at the games she loved to play; the list is endless. Her passing leaves a big hole, and she will be missed but always remembered with love.
