Roderick Stolz Obituary

Roderick Arthur Stolz
1952 ~ 2014
Rick Stolz, 61, passed away August 24, 2014 at home in Boise. Rick was born September 9, 1952 to Robert K. and Martha R. "Marty" Stolz in Oak Park, Illinois. He spent much of his childhood in Holden, Massachusetts. In 1968 his family moved to Boise where he went to Boise High and later graduated from The College of Idaho.
Moving to Boise had a big impact on the Stolz family. Ice hockey was the chosen sport in Holden, but in Boise there were no ice rinks at that time. So skiing became the passion of the Stolz boys. Rick's most enjoyable days were on the ski hill. Hence his license plates were personalized with "POWDER".
Rick's work life reflected his passions in life: Dewey's Ski Haus in McCall, Brundage Mtn. Ski Patrol, Bogus Basin Ski School, Greenwood's Ski Haus, Hart Skis, Skis Dynastar, Salomon, Micron, property appraisal, and Idaho Ice World. Rick always believed the only way to live life was to the fullest, and he did. He loved life. He loved his family.
Rick married Sara Wild in 1985 at the Shore Lodge in McCall. The mountain air, whisper of the pines and quaking aspens of McCall were always a magic "happy" place for them. Together they had one son, Tommy. Tommy, like his father, liked to ski but his passion was hockey. When Rick retired in 2012, they both coached hockey at Idaho Ice World. Working with youth hockey gave Rick much joy.
Rick had many friends through skiing, hockey and school days. All these friends and family helped him through these past 6 difficult months. The calendar was full these past few months with people flying in, driving up the driveway, and calling. Visitors were constant at the Stolz house. Thank you to all who shared this time with Rick and gave their support.
Rick is survived by his son, Tommy; and his wife, Sara both of Boise; his brother, Ken of Missoula; and his brother, Huston (Becky) of Spokane.
A Celebration of Rick's Life will take place on Saturday August 30, 2014, from 3 til 6 pm at the Stonehouse on the Boise River, 709 E. Park Blvd.
Memories, condolences, and photos may be shared at www.summersfuneral.com.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts are suggested to the Stolz Memorial Scholarship at the College of Idaho ([email protected] or 208-459-5168).

We are truly sadden...our memories of Rick are at the many hockey games we spent together watching our boys play hockey at Idaho Ice world. He was always so kind and positive and sitting next to him and Sara at the games made it even more enjoyable...so many wonderful Hockey memories with a great man and his family...

Rick and I often rode the bus home from school together and talked about skiing. We skied Bogus together throughout our high school years. Though Rick was a year ahead of me in school he always had time to be a genuine friend. I was shocked to hear of his passing. My condolence to his family and brothers Ken and Houston. My thoughts will be with you and I am sorry I can not attend the celebration on the 30th. God bless you Rick.

Rick sold me a pair of really nice Elan skis in 1980. I have a great memory of ripping up powder down Triumph with him. At that same time, he helped me quit smoking by pointing out that snoose worked just as good. :-) I remember skiing down Triumph again in about 1990 at night with 10" of fresh powder. Rick was a great golf buddy and was always talking about the book he would write: "Chipping for Par." :-) Rick always had a lot of energy and excitement about life. He was a great person. I will miss him.

Sara & Tommy my thoughts are with you as I remember so many good times and teachings from Rick. From the early Dewey days of following Rick down the mountain hopping from bump to bump to later smooth sailing thru soft deep snow. He was amazing.

A more generous, caring, and positive person I do not know. With his sparkling eyes and a smile, he guided us when our boys were ready to ski. He assured me his (Tommy's, no doubt) racer chaser was the tool I needed and, yes, he was right. His smiles live on in my boy's smiles when they are on the mountain and in all who were lucky enough to feel the passion Rick exuded. You will be missed.....

I worked with Rick in sales at Micron. He was always pleasant and positive to work with, and usually had a clever comment ready at just the right time. He was a gentleman and a nice person.
RIP, Rick.

Dear Sara and Tommy,
Rick will be greatly missed. He was fun to play with, and a great sport. I'm glad I got to meet him some 40 plus years ago while we worked together for Greenie. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this sad time. We'll all be together again someday, and I hear the powder is alway good in Heaven...
