Sonia Alexander Obituary

Sonia Jean Allen Alexander

April 4, 1941 - August 4, 2025

Twin Falls, Idaho - Sonia Jean Allen Alexander passed away August 4 at the age of 84. She was born to Charles and Helen Allen in Twin Falls on April 4, 1941. Sonia, her brother Rick, and parents were all born and raised in Twin Falls, building on a six generation legacy of Twin Falls residence. She had a deep knowledge of the history of Twin Falls and loved sharing her memories with family and friends, especially of her father's downtown business, Sterling Jewelry. She was an active member of the Twin Falls Historical Society. She loved Twin Falls; and its documented history is better for her keen memory and dedication to the community.

Sonia graduated from Twin Falls High School in 1959 and then attended the University of Idaho where she was a member of the Nu Chapter of Delta Gamma. She met the love of her life and best friend Bob Alexander while she was the Sweetheart of Sigma Chi. The two married in 1961 in Twin Falls at the Episcopal Church of the Ascension and celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary just prior to Bob's passing. The two maintained close friendships with many University of Idaho alumni and shared a great Vandal pride throughout their lives.

Sonia met wonderful friends during her tenure teaching English and Business at O'Leary Junior High and Twin Falls High School. These friends so enriched her life and were her second family. She loved teacher coffee, debriefing, and traveling with these friends including a trip ahead planned for this fall.

Sonia's greatest pride was her kids and grandkids, who lovingly referred to her as Missy. Her favorite pastime was spending time with her large extended family, including serving spaghetti dinners, preserving holiday traditions, playing card games, and sharing stories. She regularly supplied gatherings with key specialties including famous chocolate chip cookies, cherry pie, deviled eggs, and more - cementing strong family traditions of sharing meals and cooking together. Alone or with friends, she enjoyed long walks on the canyon rim almost every day and had been an avid golfer and jogger in her younger years.

As a member of the Episcopal Church since her confirmation at 14, Sonia's faith and church community were so important to her. The mentorship and friendship she received from members of the church, especially women whom she referred to lovingly as her 'other mothers' was formative. She served as a member of the altar guild, participated in Bible studies, knitting, and committees. She shared her faith with her children and grandchildren, instilling rituals like grace before dinner, prayers before bed, and committing time to faith and community. Sonia was also a long active member of the Chapter AI of P.E.O. along with her mother, mother-in-law, daughters and granddaughter. Her love and dedication to friendship and community was evident to all who knew and loved her.

Sonia is preceded in death by her husband Bob, brother Rick, and parents Helen and Charles. She is survived by her children: Dr. Mark Alexander (Larisa), Lisa Myers (Dane), Marci Boyd (Chris), and Mitchell Alexander (Janelle). In addition, they have 11 grandchildren: Alexander Myers (Francesca), Annie Myers (Michael Spiers), John Myers; Ashley, Ethan, and Kealey Alexander, Carson and Mason Boyd; Patrick, Joey, and Nathan Alexander along with two great-grandchildren, Phillip and Evelyn Myers. She is also survived by her dear sister-in-law, Barbara Allen (Ron) Hardy, brothers-in-law A. James Alexander (Susan) and Dr. Richard Alexander (Dani Jo), and many wonderful nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, August 9 at 1:00 p.m. at the Episcopal Church of the Ascension 371 Eastland Drive N. in Twin Falls. Due to road construction, it is recommended to travel from either Pole Line Road or Falls Avenue to 371 Eastland Drive North in Twin Falls.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested: the Episcopal Church of the Ascension, College of Southern Idaho Foundation, or University of Idaho Foundation.

I was shocked and saddened to learn of Sonia's passing. She was such a positive influence in my life. Sonia replaced my mother's sophomore English teaching position after my mother's (Alpha Hann) retirement, and several years later, during my student-teaching days, I had Sonia as my supervising teacher. She was brilliant, compassionate, and supportive.
I extend my deepest sympathy.

Sonia and Bob lived across the street from us on Mountain View Drive for many years. We loved Sonia's toffee at Christmas time. She was so fun to visit with. We continued to see her when she moved, but saw her frequently driving down our street looking at the old house. She will really be missed. We loved her (and Bob). My sincere condolences to your family at this time. Keep all those memories close to your heart.
