Michael Piero Obituary

Michael I. Piero
age 48, of Fremont, Ohio, passed away suddenly Friday morning. Mike was a 22 year loyal employee of the Fremont Recreation Center where he served its youth with passion, dedication, and his own unique sense of humor. Mike was a devoted son and brother who loved and supported his family unconditionally. Adored by his nieces and nephews, he was always counted on to join in on the fun and games, especially if it involved a prank. Mike was a wonderful role model for the hundreds of children he coached and inspired. Mike was especially fond of working with the Special Olympics serving as a member of the Special Olympics Committee and working with the School of Hope. Mike graduated from St. Thomas Aquinas High School in 1986 and received his B.S. in Physical Education from The Ohio State University and a Master's Degree in Education from Ohio University. He was the recreation coordinator for the City of Fremont Recreation and Parks Department and member of the National Intramural Recreation Sports Association, Ohio Recreational Sports Association, Ohio Parks & Recreation Association, Tiffin Area Basketball Association, Fremont Football Association and OHSAA where was a long time football and basketball referee. Mike recently received the inaugural City of Fremont Employee of the Month Award which is now being named in his honor. Our loss is immeasurable and our hearts are irretrievably broken, but it is our hope that his legacy will live on in the lives of the children with whom he had instilled a passion and love of sports.
He is survived by his parents David and Judith (Dowling) Piero of Canton; brothers, David (Debra) Piero Jr. of N. Canton, Patrick Piero of Avon Lake, Ohio; sisters, Anne (Robert) Silagy of N. Canton, Kathleen Piero of Canton; nephews, David Piero, Daniel Piero, Bobby Silagy, Michael Silagy; nieces, Kristan (Bill) Preston, Kelly Piero, Alisha Silagy, Kara (Andrew) Bendle; great nephew, William Preston III; and great niece, Olivia Finelli.
Mass of Christian burial will held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Christ the Servant Catholic Parish with Fr. Thomas P. Dyer as celebrant. Burial will be in Sunset Hills Memory Gardens. Friends may call Tuesday from 5-8 p.m. in the Wackerly Funeral Home. Donations may be made to St. Thomas Aquinas High School for memorial scholarship fund to be established in his name or the City of Fremont Parks and Recreation for a memorial to be established in his name. Judy and Dave,

Death never comes easy, especially when it is a young son who has given so much to those in need. The good that he has done for the youth and those with special needs will never be forgotten.

Regret that I couldn't be with you on Thursday and, due to a previous commitment, had to leave Mass just before it was over. I especially appreciated the kind words that Mike's siblings shared.

I am sure that God will hold your hands in the days, months and years ahead.

Love and Prayers,
Mary

To the Piero family,

We met Mike when we first moved to Fremont 22 years ago. Mike took an immediate interest in Adam, our Down Syndrome son and always made it a point over the years to talk, joke, and treat Adam like a friend. His work with Special Olympics took many forms: Referee, umpire, coach, Committee "champion", and friend. Our son, is brothers, and Chris and I are saddened for our loss. We were his friend, and we are just a few of many who Mike touched, shared his heart with, and we will treasure the time he spent with us. He made Fremont a much better place for both children and their parents. Our love and prayers are with his family, his co-workers, and all those who he touched with his caring.

Words cannot express what Mike meant to myself and my daughters. My girls began playing baseball at age 6 and was often told they can't play a "boys sport". Mike was always there for them and encouraged them to follow their dreams and never give up. They played for 13 years total with Mike there by their side. The love and respect they had for each other was priceless. He was like a big brother to them, always joking, having fun, but stern when he needed to be. Mike always had time whenever and wherever they were. Heaven gained a very special man, one that will be truly loved and missed by many. Sorry for the family's loss, and know that Mike will always remain in our hearts. I am sad that my grandchildren will never get to experiance playing sports with Mike, but I know he will be watching.

Without your patience and dedication I wouldn't be the athlete I am today and the reason I got back into playing soccer. You left a mark on so many lives, and you will surely not be forgotten.
