Clarence Sexton Obituary

Clarence Talmadge Sexton of Galax died peacefully on September 28, 2014 at the Golden Living Center in Galax. He was born October 13, 1923 in Grayson County to the late John Fielden Sexton and the late Sarah Elizabeth Fine. He was married to Lois Addie Metz on 27th January 1951 in Cambridge, Md.

He is survived by two brothers and spouse, Harold T. and Joanne Sexton of Wytheville and Leon H. Sexton on Indian Head, Md.; a sister, Leila Belle Altice of Daytona Beach, Fla.; sisters-in-law, Shirley SextonRita Sexton of Port Tobacco, Md. and Betty Sexton of Woodlawn; He is also survived by many nieces and nephews who considered him a mentor, friend, and a close confidant. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Addie Metz, his brothers Walter Claude Sexton, Muncy S. Sexton, Hershel F. Sexton, Voscoe E. Sexton, Camet E. Sexton, Kyle H. Sexton, Fred J. Sexton, and Willard O. Sexton, his sisters, Lillian Ruth Isom, Elizabeth Clyde Sexton, Bessie B. King, and Lottie Faye Ordos. During World War II Clarence served in the U.S. Navy until his discharge in 1946. After his military service he worked for a contractor in Maryland who was building Route 50 from Ocean City, Maryland to the newly constructed Chesapeake Bay Bridge. In 1953 he started working at the Aberdeen Proving Grounds where he specialized in heavy equipment such as cranes that lifted 110 tons with a 100 foot boom and placing the load on the mark. After 30 years he retired and returned to Grayson County, and later moving to Carroll County, Virginia.

Visitation was held October 2nd at the Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home in Independence. Following the visitation, a graveside service was conducted in the Independence Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Clarence's name may be made to Independence Fire Department, P.O. Box 588, Independence, VA 24348 or Carroll County Rescue Squad, 605 Pine St., Hillsville, VA 24348.
