Bernie was my classmate of '53. He was a great basketball player and football player. I attached some pictures from my archives of Bernie. I probably have more in my archives. We had good times at the reunion. But we are passing away one by one. RIP Fr. Bernie.

Four years have gone quickly by since Fr. Bernies passing, but the memory of our friendship still lingers. I am reminded of the happy days we shared as students at St. John Kanty Prep in Erie PA. After graduation, Fr. Bernie was the driving force in promoting and sustaining an active alumni association. He continues to be remembered in my thoughts and prayers. Rest In Peace, Bernie.

Fr Witkowski: tremendous help and extremely fair--a guide through my later years at Cardinal O'Hara

Maureen Smith

July 1, 2016

I met Msgr. Witkowski the first year Cardinal O'Hara opened, my sophomore year. He was Disciplinarian on the 'boys side' of the school. Father asked if I'd like to work in the Discipline Office which I did for three years instead of attending study hall or an early lunch period one of those years. He came to my graduation party and we kept in touch with one another now and then during the years after that. Am sorry to learn of his passing and am so happy to have known him.

We love you!

Dear Witkowski Family,
Please accept our sincerest condolences on the passing of a truly dedicated priest and dear friend. I was a schoolmate of Fr. (Msgr.) Bernie at St. John Kanty Prep in Erie PA. As far as I can remember, he always nurtured his priestly vocation. He excelled in sports and in scholastics. He was a most loyal alumnus. We alumni were always welcomed to Philly where Fr. Bernie hosted many
reunions. During our years at Kanty Prep, it was a tradition for a graduating senior to "pass on" a legacy to a member of the junior class. I had the privilege of passing on "the gift of poetry" to Fr. Bernie. He was very proud of his Polish heritage. If I recall correctly, he served as Grand Marshall of a Philly Pulaski Day parade and was active in his service to Our Lady of Czestochowa Shrine. So many fond memories!
"Requiescat in pace," Fr.Bernie
Continue to remember my wife Geraldine and me, and our family, at your altar in heaven.

I remember Msgr. Bernie from his time at St. Hedwig's in Chester. He was our moderator for our Sodality. In years to come, he was a good friend. He will be truly missed. RIP Msgr. Bernie. God just gained an angel.

Father seemed so out of place working as a disciplinarian until, one day, we realized that his genuine care and concern were the real tools of discipline. The picture in the '68 yearbook that shows him adjusting the length of a sideburns or two is priceless and always draws a look no matter the reason for opening that book. He was responsible for the formation for hundreds of young men.....many of whom reflect his spirituality and, because of his influence, have lived their lives based on fairness and compassion. Thank you Father..... rest in Peace.........

I was so very sorry to learn of Monsignor's passing . We never had the Blessing of the Easter Food at Maternity B.V.M. until Monsignor came on board, what a beautiful tradition . I am not Polish, but would bring my Easter baskets to Church to be blessed ; he was kind enough to recite the blessing in Polish then in English . When he went to Immaculate Mary Home, I took my baskets there for him to bless . I also remember visiting him @ IMH and the Phillies were on, so we sat in the TV Room and watched together . Rest in peace, my good and faithful servant .

Remember his fairness and his ability to listen to and arrogant President of the class. Thanks for your direction in my early life as a learner.

I opened the paper this morning and only opened to the obituaries by accident. I knew Father as a high school student at Cardinal O'Hara High School 1964 - 1968. He was the disciplinarian for the boy's side of the school. I was on student council and allowed to work in his office during my study hall. He was amazingly kind. When he went to Rome, he wrote to me and if I look through my memorabilia I am sure I could still find his cards. I lost touch with him so it has been nice to read about his priesthood re: google. I hope he would have been happy to learn that I have been married for 46 years and managed to adopt 2 Catholic Charities babies who are wonderful adults today.

Monsignor Bernie was my grandmother's neighbor growing up. He broke her window once playing stickball. He was a good friend to my father, and he became very much a friend and mentor after my father passed. He was so proud to have met with St. Pope John Paul II, and even made it into a comic on the Pope's life. He was a great leader at SJC and appreciated the traditions and culture not only of the Catholic Church, but the Polish Catholic Church. His presence will be missed. Requiescat in pace. Although he would probably want to be remembered as a great athlete his true strength came out everyday in his ability to lead people. We all felt lucky to be under his protective wing knowing that his unwavering support would always be there. Even if we didn't necessarily always deserve it.
