Eileen Segal Obituary

Segal Eileen Rae (nee Abrams) March 26, 1937 - Jan. 13, 2021 Born on March 26th, 1937 in North Philadelphia, PA. She graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1958, with a degree in Political Science. Eileen married Leonard Segal, on January 10, 1959, whom she met while working at Metropolitan Hospital when he was a medical intern. They had an admirable, deep commitment and dedication to one another. Later in their lives, they relocated to Cherry Hill, NJ. Eileen's deep love for animals led her to be very involved in the Animal Welfare Association of Southern NJ. With a small group of friends, she started a non-profit organization called PetPals, that allowed medically fragile and poor seniors to keep their companion animals. Eileen was an extremely loving mother (and mother-in-law) to Nina (Will Kennedy), Kim (pre-deceased in 2002), and incredibly devoted and attentive grandmother to Isabel, Reed and Sam. She and her husband devoted three decades to caring for their daughter Kim who suffered from a chronic childhood disease with tremendous fortitude and love. Eileen taught us, through her everyday actions, the true meaning of kindness and care; she truly brought a smile to the faces of everyone around her. Donations may be made in celebration of her memory to the Eileen and Leonard Segal Pet Therapy Fund through the Animal Welfare Association (AWA) at 509 Centennial Blvd. Voorhees, NJ 08043 or to give a tribute donation online through this link, https://support.awanj.org/make-a-memorial-or-tribute-gift, referencing this specific fund by name. Due to COVID, funeral is private, but an online memorial service to celebrate Eileen's life will be announced at a later date.

Eileen was a board member and Officer of PetPALS of Southern NJ since its inception. She was a driving force in PetPALS until her health forced her to give up her position. She is one of the reasons that I decided to join the board of directors. She was an inspiration to all of us volunteers and her support to our clients and their pets never waivered.
She will be greatly missed by all of us.

Eileen was my big cousin. That’s what she told me back in 57’ while sitting on her bed.
She was 14 years older; I was 7 and so I agreed.
Me and my family had gone back to Philly for a visit a couple years prior. I remember talking with her about animals in general. She had many all around her bedroom, and before leaving she gave me a little horse to take home. When we got back in Michigan I put the horse on my nightstand where it has remained ever since.
Eileen struck a chord in my heart in 57’ that never broke. She is all of the goodness that is said about her! Although our relationship had been for the most part at a distance over the years we were always in touch.
I will miss you VERY MUCH Big Cuz
Picture was taken in 2012 when Len-and Eileen came to visit us.

I met Eileen in the 1980's when we did pet therapy visits with AWA. She is one of the nicest, kindest people I've ever known. We met for lunch regularly until she moved to be closer to her family. I just found a picture of us & Nina at the March for Animals in 1996. May her memory be for a blessing. [email protected]
