FREDERICK CHARLES, age 89, on Oct. 8, 2014, was a life-long Mt. Airy resident, and an avid historian of the local Philadelphia area. Fred served his country in WWII as an aircraft engine mechanic for the U.S. Army 457th Bomb Squadron at Glatton Air Base in England. He earned his degree in Civil Engineering from Villanova University, and worked as an engineer for the Pennsylvania Railroad, followed by a 23 year career at Sun Oil Corporation. After leaving Sun Oil, Fred became the estate superintendent for the McNeil Family in Plymouth Meeting. Upon retirement, he worked as a guide at the Benjamin Chew House, Cliveden, in Philadel-phia. He enjoyed the Phillies, New Orleans Jazz, Barbershop singing and the great American Standards.
Fred is predeceased by his wife, Pauline Dee Boyd. He is survived by his son Stephen Charles Achenbach, his daughter-in-law Patricia Achenbach (Morganti), his granddaughters Margaret Paulina and Caroline Morgan as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. A memorial service will be held on Friday, November 7, 2014, 11:00 A.M. at Ivy Hill Cemetery, 1201 Easton Road, Phila., PA 19150. All are invited to attend the luncheon following the service.
