My family and I are both shocked and saddened to hear about your sudden loss. Ian was the volunteer that rowed with my son, Chris, in the PA Adaptive Rowing program on Wednesday nights, and also Chris's partner for the 2010 Bayada Regatta. In addition, Ian was a born teacher; he never failed to offer his assistance or share his knowledge. When Chris, who attends the community college in Montgomery County was worried about taking a history course, Ian offered to make adaptations for him if he wanted to enroll at DCCC. Ian had a generous spirit and we will surely miss him! Our heartfelt condolences go out to your family...The Artur Family

To The Hemphill Family,
I was shocked and saddened to hear of Ian's passing. I first got to know him as I walked through Brandywine St. and watched how meticulously he was in taking care of his red Volvo.
Later in conversation I learned that he was a member of Malta Boat Club knew many of the same people on the River and an avid rower, as am I being a member Of Penn ACRC. We shared many a conversation about Boathouse Row and rowing with the intention of getting together in a double, schedules permitting.
My sincere condolences, I considered Ian a fine person, sincere in conversation and very likable in personality.

I am the Executive Director at PA Center for Adapted Sports. Ian was a valued volunteer in our program, Philadelphia Adaptive Rowing/PRPD, and always kind and generous with his time. He was free with sharing what he knew, and unafraid to tell you!
The athletes with disabilities who were lucky enough to row with him benefited from his expertise. I will remember him most, standing on our dock, looking around to see where he could be most useful, and putting himself to work getting the task done.
Ian will be missed by us, but not forgotten. Oars Up Ian!

To the Hemphill family:
I knew Ian as a fellow student at Miquon Upper School. I was shocked and saddened to learn of your sudden and untimely loss. Ian was a smart, sweet and active kid and was obviously a very successful adult in every sense.
Please accept my sincere condolences during this most difficult time. I hope you are comforted by all of your memories of him. He accomplished so much good in his lifetime. I am so sorry he was taken from you too soon.
Sincerely,
Lisa Greenwald-Era

I remember ian well.. he was always an eccentric individualist, even at *our* unusual high school. My memories of him are of hiking through the woods together, and biking around Mt. Airy and Germantown..
His friendship was steadfast. He was highly intelligent, an honest, and a decent caring man always; ever forthright, he did not shy away from expressing his opinions to others, even if he knew they might, or did , not agree with his own. Ian was a gentle man , and a Gentleman always. His leaving our midst leaves the world slightly more diminished...
